This fine work has sat dormant for many years and has now come to light thanks to the efforts of Charlie Vernon, Bass Trombonist of the Chicago Symphony, who performed this virtuoso work as a young performer. The concerto is in the standard three movement form: Fast, slow, fast. This publication is a reduction from the original orchestral version (to be released at some point in the future). Here is a description of the Concerto by the composer, John W. Ware. I started on the trombone concerto in my junior year studying composition at Indiana University. While working on it, I learned of an opportunity to make it sort of a thesis piece (though students didn't write a thesis in composition while an undergrad). The original version was for trombone with string orchestra, and it was performed by the IU String Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Arthur Corra, with Robert Priez, trombone, as part of my senior composition recital. I thought the performance was quite good (Priez played extraordinarily well), and the piece received a newspaper review in the Indiana Daily Student, in which the reviewer wrote that the work was almost too exciting. I thought at the time that he had given me and my music a fine compliment. I made a piano version of the accompaniment, shortening and tightening the first movement, for performances in 1966; I made a second revision in 1967 for a performance by E. J. Eaton, trombonist at the University of Tennessee at Martin, arriving at the form in which the work exists now. The first movement is in fairly normal sonata-allegro form, in the key of A minor. It alternates between assertive and more thoughtful moods. There is no introduction; the soloist enters immediately and dominates much of the movement. The main theme is--by some manipulation--a source for most of the other themes, and all of the themes are used in close proximity to each other, including contrapuntal combinations, especially near the end. Originally the movement included a lengthy fugato, now much shortened and including a stretto that builds and subsides before a cadenza leading to a coda based on both the principal and secondary themes. Key relations in this movement, as in the other two, are quite free and often chromatic, with frequent third-relations; but returns to the tonic at the end are emphatic. The writing is challenging for both soloist and accompanist; the piece is substantial, requiring technique and stamina. The second movement is in F minor and is also built on both contrast and close relationships between the main and secondary themes. The main theme is heard in the piano part before the soloist enters. The mood is more lyric than in the first movement, but with dramatic episodes also. In this movement are some definite derivations from themes in the first movement. The ending is a sort of lengthened shadow of the opening. The finale returns to A minor, with themes slightly related to polonaise rhythms, but with strong echoes of first-movement themes. Here, too, dramatic and lyric episodes alternate, with dotted rhythms frequently propelling the music forward. The introduction is a brief and simple preparation for the solo entry. Later in the movement, a very brief, slightly slower section is soon overtaken by the original tempo. Toward the end, there is a second cadenza, again leading to a swift and energetic coda. The work is about 20 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

When I removed the important lyrics from Feast of Love in order to make an accompanied instrumental solo I needed to convey the passionate drama just in the music. I changed a simple strophic form into an ABA Coda with every verse getting a different treatment. My harmony is much richer and more varied than the original. I added new articulations, dynamics, and other markings as well as a cadenza for one of the bridges. Excellent piece for a student to learn Romantic characteristics of expression, phrase shaping, and sempre rubato. This song is also excellent for Weddings. Alternative translations of the title are Celebration of Love and Love's Fire. You can definitely feel the fire and passion in this beautiful piece!This arrangement is not difficult to play, but is marked Early Intermediate because it requires musicianship to play well.3 minutes4 pages score, 2 page solo partTemporary recording of piano reduction of full score.

Tosca is an opera in three acts by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. The opera is set in June 1800 in Rome, and tells the story of the Kingdom of Naples and the threat to its control of Rome by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. Some of Puccini’s best-known arias can be found in Tosca.The opera is based on Victorien Sardou’s dramatic play of the same name (La Tosca). Puccini saw the play at least twice in 1889 and begged his publisher, Giulio Ricordi, to obtain the rights to turn it into an opera, which were secured in 1891 – although Puccini relinquished the rights to Alberto Franchetti before being recommissioned in 1895. Puccini wrote “I see in this Tosca the opera I need, with no overblown proportions, no elaborate spectacle, nor will it call for the usual excessive amount of music.” It took 4 years to write, with Puccini arguing with his librettists (Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa) and his publisher. The critics reviews were indifferent, but it was an immediate success with the public. The opera is through-composed, with the different musical elements weaved from piece to piece. Puccini used the Wagner’s leitmotif concept to identity different parts of the opera.Taken from Act 3, E lucevan le stelle is sung by Cavaradossi, a painter, who has fallen for the singer Tosca. The corrupt Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia, longs for Tosca himself and, upon suspecting Cavaradossi of helping a political prisoner escape, he takes the opportunity to get rid of Cavaradossi and blackmail Tosca into being with him. The guards lead Cavaradossi to the roof of Castel Sant'Angelo, where he is told he has 1 hour to live before being executed. He asks to write a letter to Tosca, overcome by memories, he sings E lucevan le stelle (And the starts shone). It was selected by the tenor Wynne Evans as one of the most romantic songs for his top ten arias for Classic FM. He described it as “another tenor classic, both tragic and beautiful.”This arrangement (for solo euphonium and piano accompaniment) includes an alternative part for euphonium in treble clef. The work is tonal, in three movements. The first movement, Moderato, is in sonata form largely in 6/8, with a lyrical trombone and sparkling piano moving between B and E-flat. The middle movement in A major labeled Andante sospirando has Eastern overtones, both rhythmic and tonal. In a sub-divided 3/4, the sound in the first half is a mystical Lydian, shifting the same melody to Ionian at the midpoint. A dramatic piano section punctuates both halves. The third movement, Allegro is a modified rondo form in a duple meter with an Americana sound. It brims with confidence and playfulness, alternating between C and G-flat, with sweeping themes and a driving, wilder midsection. The composition is in three movements: I Cherub vs Imp II Guardian III Old Nick This new work was commissioned by his former student, Gordon Wolfe, Principal Trombonist of the Toronto Symphony. The Concertino is one of the featured works on Wolfe's beautiful new recording, REFLECTIONS. Here is what the composer says about his own work: The 'tritone' has been referred to as a dissonance for centuries, and has been called 'the devil in music'. This interval can be quite difficult to sing in tune, and can often grate on the ears, yet it can also have a great dramatic effect. It is tuly a 'devilish' little beast, and it is what inspired me. The devil's antagonist is surely an angel. So, imagine one's guardian angel on one shoulder, and 'Old Nick' on the other, battling for your conscience, and you will essentially have what this three movement piece is all about. Concertino is for very advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length.

The work was first premiered that year in recital at the University of British Columbia's School of Music. The work has two very distinct themes: the 1st theme, Fanfare which consists of dramatic leaps of 4th's and octaves somewhat reminiscent of Hindemith. The 2nd theme: the stately Processional, is based on the first three notes of a major diatonic scale. The scale presents itself in many different guises throughout the 5 1/2 minute work. For advanced performers.
