Reinhold Gliere's Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Orchestra, Op. 82 was written in 1942-1943 and shows off the composer's gentle melodic musical style reminiscent of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and even Wagner. The choice of a vocal soloist singing without words was not new at that time, as Rachmaninov's beautiful Vocalise had already been composed. But....adding a full orchestra to the mix was a gamble that paid off, as this is one of Gliere's finest works. The Concerto consists of two movements -- Andante and Allegro and is about 14 minutes in length. The 1st movement's rich melodies are full of lush harmonic textures and the work drives from climax to climax. The finale Allegro is lighthearted and bounces along merrily to the end. Gordon Cherry's arrangement for Alto Trombone with Piano accompaniment reduction brings a major new work to the Alto Trombone repertoire. This work can also be performed on the Tenor Trombone, however, the style of the work makes it perfect for the Alto Trombone. Appropriate for advanced performers. (Under license from G. The best known March of the set, it had its premiere in Liverpool on 19 October 1901, with Elgar conducting the Liverpool Orchestral Society. The Trio contains the tune known as Land of Hope and Glory. In 1902 the tune was re-used, in modified form, for the Land of hope and glory section of his Coronation Ode for King Edward VII. The words were further modified to fit the original tune, and the result has since become a fixture at the Last Night of the Proms, and an English sporting anthem. In the United States, the Trio section Land of Hope and Glory of March No. 1 is often known simply as Pomp and Circumstance or as The Graduation March and is played as the processional tune at virtually all high school and some college graduation ceremonies. It was first played at such a ceremony on 28 June 1905, at Yale University, where the Professor of Music Samuel Sanford had invited his friend Elgar to attend commencement and receive an honorary doctorate of music. Elgar accepted, and Sanford made certain he was the star of the proceedings, engaging the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the College Choir, the Glee Club, the music faculty members, and New York musicians to perform two parts from Elgar's oratorio The Light of Life and, as the graduates and officials marched out, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. Elgar repaid the compliment by dedicating his Introduction and Allegro to Sanford later that year. The tune soon became de rigueur at American graduations, used primarily as a processional at the opening of the ceremony. This arrangement for trombone or euphonium (C and Bb) with piano is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. This version is arranged as a solo for Trombone with Piano. The pdf file contains both the piano accompaniment and the separate solo part. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Both parts play the melody. The overall performance time is around four and a half minutes. The songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Magic Horn) by Gustav Mahler are set for voice and piano and voice and orchestra taken from German folk poems assembled and published by editors Arnim and Brentano around 1805-08. The Vier Lieder beautifully edited for Trombone (Tenor or Bass) by Ralph Sauer are taken from Mahler's fourth set of these poems published in 1899. The four songs are: I. Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? (Who has created this song?) II. Lob des hohen Verstandes (In praise of lofty intellect) III. Verlor’ne Müh’ (Labor lost) IV. Lied des Verfolgten im Turm (Song of the persecuted in the tower) Mr. Sauer also includes the German lyrics with English translations. Altogether the songs are about 12 minutes in length. The range is suitable for moderately advanced performers.

The Trombone world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Concerto with Band. The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile. Mr. Sauer brings a true Trombone feel to the 4 1/2 minute work for advanced performers.

It consists of a theme and eight variations, plus a grand finale. It was written in two forms, one for two pianos and the more well-known one for orchestra.There is a musicological controversy as to whether the theme is actually from the pen of Haydn or another mystery composer. Some are now referring to it as the Saint Anthony Variations. Nevertheless, this 18-minute work by Brahms is a magnificent work of genius.Not to be outdone, Mr. Sauer has created his own masterpiece of this work, arranged for virtuoso artists of the Trombone and Piano. It will surely become a classic in the repertoire.

Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. The original piece is part of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suite No. 3 for orchestra, in D Major, BWV 1068, written for Prince Leopold of Anhalt. The so-called Air on the G String dates from one of these latter employments. In the service of the Prince of Cöthen, Bach composed not only the famous Brandenburg Concertos, but also several orchestral suites, from the third of which comes the Air on the G String. This curious title derives from a later arrangement of this piece for violin solo, in which the melody is played entirely on the lower, higher string of the instrument.
