The theme is one of God's Grace, the Christian's response to what He has done for us, and God's Love, all seen through His Son, Jesus Christ. The word, sonata is used by the composer/arranger because of the many ways the hymn tunes are presented and developed through: motifs, secondary themes, variation, repetition, recapitulation and other compositional devices. 3 ONE MOVEMENT HYMN SONATAS is perfect for Church services, recitals or gatherings where hymns of God's grace, His love and our praise to Him is desired. A piece shrouded in mystery and intrigue. For myself, I mean: I don’t even know what the title means, nor why this particular piece should wear it. The music and the title came as a package deal, falling on me out of the blue one day. It wasn’t on my to-do list, nor was I looking for extra work. But perhaps that’s the answer: the piece itself is the Agent, breaking into my nicely ordered studio and disrupting things for the next few months. I’ll have to think about this some more.But I digress. Whatever its meaning or provenance, it’s an odd little sonatina. For instance, at its heart the second movement is a traditional scherzo and trio, but it is as misshapen as anything H. P. Lovecraft himself might have envisioned. Even I am not sure where the beginnings and endings of the sections are without a score in hand. Mystery upon mystery. Another example: as I began to work on the third movement, I wasn’t sure if it would be a simple binary or ternary form, a rondo or a sonata-allegro. I never did find out, to be honest. All I know is that, to my ears, it sounds like what might have resulted if I had been asked to write the theme to The Simpsons. The audio sample will give you some idea of what I mean.More questions than answers.Performance time is a little under 14 minutes.

Much of the music is a reflection on the cyclic nature of negative thought, the recurring arpeggios at the opening give some indication of this. Breaking out of these patterns only seems to lead to further dissonance and uncertainty. It also explores the effect of lowering notes by a single semitone and how the smallest of intervals can have a significant impact on the harmony at any given moment. The work is in four movements: 1. Andante moderato. This movement features two main musical statements pivoting around a central dance like idea. 2. Largo. A movement exploring a sense of isolation and disconnect between the Clarinet and Piano. 3. Largo con moto. A moment of calm, featuring some of the melodic contours from the previous movement but treated as if heard with a different frame of mind. 4. Allegro con moto. A slightly mischievous finale, featuring moments where the instruments imitate each other in an almost mocking fashion.

The music of Monologues represents three kinds of social conversations.I. Desultory - A desultory monologue is marked by a disconnected jumping or passing from one thing to another, especially things not connected with the main subject. A twelve-tone row seems to lend itself naturally to this kind of disconnected expression.II. Epigrammatic - The term might be applied to monologues in which the speaker uses few words to make important observations or statements. The clarinet’s motives seem to be interrupted by figures in the piano which are the result of the completion of the twelve-tone rows begun by the clarinet.III. Philippic - It is nearly impossible to be a part of social conversation that does not lead at some point to verbal harangues against individuals, entities, or ideologies in politics. Demosthenes titled each of his orations against King Philip of Macedon a Philippic, as did Cicero his speeches against Mark Antony, and thus began a time-honored tradition. The music of this movement includes frequent changes of both regular and irregular meters and repetitions of musical motives and figures. Rondo form enhances the representation of a speaker driving home one principal subject.
