He himself played regularly in a legendary quartet with the best flautists of his day: Jean Firmin Brossa, Johannes Donjon and Paul Taffanel. This Fantaisie sur des Motifs de l’Opera “Guillaume Tell†was published in the year following the first performance of the opera both by Schott in Mainz and, with insignificant discrepancies, by Troupenas in Paris (Plate number 374), the original publisher of Rossini’s last four operas. English • German.Xavier Boisselot studied composition at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1836 he won the 1er Grand prix de Rome with his cantata Velléda. His opera Ne touchez pas à la reine was first performed in 1847, followed by Mosquita la sorcière. Despite growing success, after 1850 he spent less time working on composition as he took over the management of his father’s piano factory Boisselot & Fils in Marseille. Flautist Jean Rémusat came from Bordeaux. In 1832 he won the 1er prix at the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Jean-Louis Tulou. He worked as principal flautist at the Queen’s Theatre in London until its closure in 1853. After a few more years working at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris he went to work as a conductor in Shanghai, where he died at the age of 65. Rémusat – generally referred to without his first name – is often encountered by flautists as the arranger of well-known pieces from that time. Plate no. 12099 / published in 1853.

Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs.  School Years First of all, Sullivan attended music school at the Royal Academy of Music. Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic opera such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883. Â

The full score and set of parts are available separately. Rossini's aria from La Cenerentola Non più mesta has been a popular theme since it was first composed and is one of his most recognized tunes. Many paraphrases and variations were written on it in the 19th century for various instruments including one for violin and orchestra by Paganini. One set of variations for flute and piano is attributed to a young Chopin, who is said to have composed it for his father. For this arrangement, the variations have been expanded with an introduction and coda from the opera. A newly written orchestral accompaniment in the style of Chopin and Rossini was made along with interludes between the variations to allow the soloist to rest. The result is a new 10 minute showpiece for flute and orchestra in the same vein as Chopin's Variations on La ci da rem la mano and Rossini's variations for clarinet and orchestra. The flute part from the variations has not been altered so it is hoped that this new compilation will be a welcome addition to the solo flute repertoire. Their virtuoso duo playing was greatly admired and they captivated audiences in the musical capitals of Europe with works they had composed themselves.In 1842 the brothers were founder members of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. After spending some time as principal flautist at the Bucharest Opera (1835) and in the orchestra of the Hungarian National Theatre (1841), Franz Doppler decided to return to Vienna, where he worked as principal flautist and conductor at the Court opera and was appointed professor at the Conservatoire in 1865. Awarded the Franz-Joseph medal by the Kaiser in 1881, he died in Baden near Vienna in 1883.

English • German.The Italian Giulio Briccialdi was taught to play the flute chiefly by his father. His virtuoso career began at an early age and he was appointed as flute teacher to the Count of Syracuse in Sicily. On numerous tours his playing drew enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics alike: ‘The only really good flute-player that I have ever seen’, wrote Rockstro in A Treatise on the Flute. In 1871 Briccialdi was appointed as a professor at the Conservatoire in Florence. Having been introduced to the newly constructed cylindrical flute by Theobald Böhm in 1847, he added some minor further modifications of his own. His Bb thumb key was a useful addition to the original Böhm system subsequently known in the history of flute making as the ‘Biccialdi thumb key’. As a composer, apart from a single opera he mainly wrote pieces for the flute in the fashion of the time: arrangements, sets of variations and virtuoso showpieces a large number of which were published by Schott. In the original publication of Allegro alla Spagnuola op. 69 bars 23 to 41 were omitted from the score and only printed in the accompanying flute part. For this new edition the missing piano accompaniment has been reconstructed using the material available. Plate no. 12098 / published in 1853.
