Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749210). Downton Abbey was a much loved TV series that ran for six seasons capturing the hearts of many across the world. The composer of the music, John Lunn, won two Primetime Emmys for the hauntingly beautiful score. I have arranged this wonderful piece for violin and piano, as well as for cello and piano, and string quartet/string orchestra. The 30 sec clip is done on Sibelius software as I have not yet been able to record this piece live, but if you search my Youtube Channel, Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, Downton Abbey, you can see and hear the live version. The harmony and structure is exactly the same. I have chosen a key that would be suitable for ABRSM Grade 3 and above. At bar 16 however, the pianist will need to pick up the end of the phrase from the flute without breaking the melodic line. Make sure that you grow through the phrases with your pianist. It is a piece that requires a great deal of ebb and flow with lots of crescendo and diminuendo throughout for you to feel together! The Rain , can be played down the octave ,is an extension exercise to the pitch bend low note chromatic exercise in the Foundation Tools section of The Flautist. The low register of the flute can deliver some beautiful warm deep tone if worked on correctly and controlled. It requires relaxation, flexibility and control. It is an excellent opportunity to find the speaking point of the flute, hold it and carry it through a melody.The melody covers the low to middle register perfectly, demanding an expressive, warm and projective tone.Exercises in order to get the most out of this melody: All of them are in the Foundation Tools section of the website.Whistle tones over the full three registers of the flute, concentrate on the lower fingerings as they are the hardest, if having trouble relax the lips and make sure the airstream is centred.Pitch bend over the full three registers of the flute. Can use arpeggio pattern to do this or chromatic pattern.Pitch bend low note chromatic exercise coming up to the most centred warm tone from the bend and carrying it through down to low C or BHarmonics over the full range and vocalised harmonics. Make sure to test them against the actual note, they must be exactly the same pitch. Aim to get a beautiful tone and singing style when playing harmonics, they can be really beautiful quality wise.If feeling super inspired sing the low register chromatically into the flute whilst fingering it.Do a lot of legato slurred work to warm up before commencing articulation.Air is king and controlling it is the key to everything. If the air speed is not controlled between notes life becomes hard.Keep your tongue low and out of the way of the air stream, never block the air. That is why I use da for tonguing.

This arrangement adapted for flute and piano was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. The transcription remains faithful to the structure, with only one change in tone, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as being used as an activity in ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions. Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

These works reveal him to have been a composer with taste, a strong sense of form and a mastery of harmony.

It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end of The Avengers, Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets his dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. It is the latter version that is heard in Endgame and the one that forms the basis of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find It’s Been a Long Long Time ideal for formal and informal concert performances. with both solo instrument and piano enjoying plenty of melodic interest. The Cantata 156 (BWV 156) was written for the third Sunday after Epiphany in 1729, and was first performed on January 23 of that year. The text is by Picander, one of Bach's favorite librettists. of the four cantatas written by Bach for the feast, it was the last and only one scored for solo voice. This is a choral cantata, employing a choral melody in several movements. Cantata 156, in fact, employs two different choral melodies and texts in the second and sixth movements. A cantata is a sung symphony consisting of several parts, one of which is the Arioso, which is the initial instrumental part.

The full score and set of parts are available separately. Rossini's aria from La Cenerentola Non più mesta has been a popular theme since it was first composed and is one of his most recognized tunes. Many paraphrases and variations were written on it in the 19th century for various instruments including one for violin and orchestra by Paganini. One set of variations for flute and piano is attributed to a young Chopin, who is said to have composed it for his father. For this arrangement, the variations have been expanded with an introduction and coda from the opera. A newly written orchestral accompaniment in the style of Chopin and Rossini was made along with interludes between the variations to allow the soloist to rest. The result is a new 10 minute showpiece for flute and orchestra in the same vein as Chopin's Variations on La ci da rem la mano and Rossini's variations for clarinet and orchestra. The flute part from the variations has not been altered so it is hoped that this new compilation will be a welcome addition to the solo flute repertoire. Pourquoi Pas? - This piece started life as a violin and piano piece written whilst Tomlinson was on active service in northern France during the Second World War serving as a wireless mechanic in the RAF. His commanding office was a good violinist and had found a local French family who had a grand piano. Hearing that Ernest was studying composition he was challenged to write a piece to entertain the French family. The piece was named after a local cafe much frequented by the troops. Chadkirk Idyll - Written in 2002, this was originally for recorder and guitar and then rescored in 2003 for recorder and string quartet. Naturally, it works very well for flute and piano so this arrangement was made at about the same time. The mental image of a small and lonely chapel in the river valley at the base of a windswept hillside inspired the melodies around which the Idyll was shaped. Air - This piece started life as a cello and piano piece and has also been arranged for violin and piano. Linda's Dance - During the late 1950's and all through the 1960's Tomlinson wrote much orchestral music intended for use as background music in radio, films and tv. The piece was part of a suite that was eventually published as his first Light Music Suite. He always found titles a difficulty but his youngest daughter, Linda, was very fond of dancing so he simply called this movement Linda's Dance. The original orchestration was for alto flute but the composer was prevailed upon to make this concert flute and piano arrangement.

This arrangement is based on the original publication from William Walker's Southern Harmony where the music is basically a 3 voices choral and this arrangement is almost just a transcription to flute and piano. The melody has little changes as the way it is interpreted today but keeps almost the same harmony from the original. It is written in a straight easy way for players to enjoy. Although the title of the piece comes from the hymn written by John Newton this is only an instrumental arrangement. The PDF includes the piano score (two pages) and the flute part (one page).

One of the better known nocturnes, this piece has a rhythmic freedom that came to characterize Frédéric Chopin's later work. The piece is 85 measures long and in 6/4 meter is written in ternary form; after the primary theme, the secondary theme starts in measure 19, followed by a modified version of the primary theme in measure 70. The opening section moves into a contrasting middle section in the same key signature, which flows back to the opening material in a transitional passage. The reprise of the first section grows out of this, followed by a Picardy third ending.This arrangement for flute with piano accompaniment reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for any purpose and occasion.
