In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. The flutist, composer and professor of music Theophilus Bucher had a settled and successful life after his immigration to England, where he is reported as newly arrived in 1831. We are lucky to have a monument at his grave in Edinburgh (in the Dean Cemetery) which gives both his date and place of birth, as well as the date and place of his demise. Theophile Bucher was born at Schlestadt, Alsace, on March 13, 1802, and died at Edinburgh, December 20, 1871. The obituary published in Signale für die Musikalische Welt, in March 1872, which states he came from Naples, from French parents. That obituary, although in German, gives his name in the French form of Theophile Boucher, the only source which gives this spelling for his surname. Certainly, his early successes and earliest publications seem to be in Naples, although he is reported in other parts of Italy as well. Objets Trouvés (2019) (score and parts) This piece for flute and piano is dedicated to the silenced artists that perished during WWII and is inspired by two fragments that I found in the in the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.: an ink drawing entitled A Brighter Future, by Bedrich Fritta, and a musical sketch of a twelve-tone row composed by the Moravian composer, Gideon Klein. I was captivated by the ink drawing with its clear expression of freedom and the still life that depicts a violin and musical manuscript containing a music motive in Ab major. The construction of my composition is largely derived from the dual tonal-atonal nature of the two motives as it drives forward in thematic variations expressing the conflicting emotions of hope and despair. Fauré Background: In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works: Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. In this case variations on “love you ” all the way through.Relates brilliantly to Melodious Studies number 11, 13, 14 and also 8.I am a big fan of playing slowly and having absolute control of everything I do down to the last detail and a melody like this is a great tool to practice this. I don’t believe one can play fast before control over slow playing and expression is mastered.Our most natural instrument is our voice . Singing and playing this melody is a terrific way to bridge the gap between the metal flute and one’s voice. The outcome is an amazing resonance ,musical quality in the tone and natural phrasing.Moyse was asked what he thought the French School of flute playing was and he answered” being able to sound like other instruments”. We have to start with the first port of call – our voice.The words you can use for phrasing are ” love you , love you , love you , love you, love you so.” “I really love you so much” ” I really love you so” etc all the way through . You can make up your own.It is worth singing and playing this through. By that I mean play 2 notes, sing 2 and play 2 all the way through without interrupting the musical flow, resonance and tone quality. Great for practising going between singing and playing quickly.Love was a favourite word of Moyse and Wibb. I see why!. It innately has so much expression, warmth, opens up the mouth and in Moyse’s words “scoops the last spoonful of mayonnaise from the jar. ” You definitely can’t say it with “an ugly nasal voice”- Moyse quote.The tone has to have life and expression. I hear so often soft playing as the player blowing softly but that gives such a dull lifeless outcome.

Pourquoi Pas? - This piece started life as a violin and piano piece written whilst Tomlinson was on active service in northern France during the Second World War serving as a wireless mechanic in the RAF. His commanding office was a good violinist and had found a local French family who had a grand piano. Hearing that Ernest was studying composition he was challenged to write a piece to entertain the French family. The piece was named after a local cafe much frequented by the troops. Chadkirk Idyll - Written in 2002, this was originally for recorder and guitar and then rescored in 2003 for recorder and string quartet. Naturally, it works very well for flute and piano so this arrangement was made at about the same time. Ernest wrote On receiving the request to write this piece, the description of Chadkirk and it's history conjured up for me an imaginary picture back in history. The mental image of a small and lonely chapel in the river valley at the base of a windswept hillside inspired the melodies around which the Idyll was shaped. Air - This piece started life as a cello and piano piece and has also been arranged for violin and piano. Linda's Dance - During the late 1950's and all through the 1960's Tomlinson wrote much orchestral music intended for use as background music in radio, films and tv. The piece was part of a suite that was eventually published as his first Light Music Suite. He always found titles a difficulty but his youngest daughter, Linda, was very fond of dancing so he simply called this movement Linda's Dance. The original orchestration was for alto flute but the composer was prevailed upon to make this concert flute and piano arrangement.
