Friction was composed at the beginning for the 8th International Academy for New Composition and Audio Art Avantgarde Schwaz 2000 (Tirol/ Austria), during the Summer 2000. The initial line up adjusted to the Academie’s ensemble in residence Het trio (Flute, Bass Clarinet, Piano) plus Alto Saxophone. Almost One year later I revised the piece and slightly changed the instrumentation, using Violoncello instead of Alto Sax. That gave to the piece more timbral variety with better balance as well as expressed better the work’s musical idea. The starting point of the work is the characteristics of Friction a real world sounding event, which then is abstracted and applied to form the idea for the compositional process. The work has three main sections. The first section is quite homophonic and harmonic; the middle one is inharmonic and energetic and works as crossfade to the last section, which is characterized as a more linear with repeated patterns. The transformation from one section to another is the most important and long part of the composition. It is a kind of transformation of the sound itself, a timbral exploration of the characteristics of the initial idea. Moreover, electroacoustic techniques are modeled using acoustic instrumental means. To achieve that I make use conventional musical instruments, utilizing extended performance techniques (which I could call timbral techniques). As well, instruments coupled with the use of unconventional objects treated as musical instruments or extensions of them (boxes, plastic or metal cards etc). That allows a better development, control and transformation of the sound. Friction was awarded the Second Prize at The Second Seoul International Competition for Composers in Seoul/ Korea and was Finalist at The Ensemble Eleven Young Composers Competition 2002 in Manchester/ United Kingdom. - Panayiotis Kokoras, York 2001-.

On a journey in the Holy Land in 1865, Brooks travelled from Jerusalem to Bethlehem on horseback, assisting there in a church service on Christmas Eve. These lyrics, written in 1867, were a result of that evening. The church’s organist, Lewis Redner, composed the melody on December 23, 1868. The first run alone lasted for 33 performances. L'Elisir remains an important work in the repertory of major opera houses in the twenty-first century. The Larghetto aria 'Una furtiva lagrima' (A furtive tear) is the romanza from act 2, scene 8. It is arranged here for advanced-intermediate Piano Quartet consisting of Concert Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Piano and Cello. The original key is a minor, but this new setting in Bb minor has a darker sound that is much better suited to these instruments.

It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. This full version is arranged as a Solo for Flute and Piano; the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The single pdf file contains both the score and the solo instrumental part. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both the solo and accompaniment enjoying melodic interest. It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end of The Avengers, Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets his dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. It is the latter version that is heard in Endgame and the one that forms the basis of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find It’s Been a Long Long Time ideal for formal and informal concert performances. with both solo instrument and piano enjoying plenty of melodic interest. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Flute and Piano includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only.Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. ISBN 9790570483860.For quite a few years before I took up the clarinet I was a serious recorder player, and I wrote a little suite of pieces in the style of Byrd and Farnaby for recorder and spinet called 'His Folly'. Some years later I decided to write a couple of simple very simple pieces for flute and piano which were also within the treble recorder range. The first was Cavatina (29 bars in total) and the second was Roundelay (45 bars in total). A few years ago my flautist wife Wendy (for whom the pieces were originally written) played them through, and it occurred to me that each of them could be capable of being considerably reworked. I did this and in the course of re-composing the Roundelay became so different that I felt the original title was no longer appropriate. Thus the rather slender Roundelay became a fully fleshed Villanelle.

German • English • French.Even though Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), admittedly, was no fan of the flute, he wrote unforgettable music for this instrument 'that I can't stand': two concertos, a double concerto with harp, the original version of the Wind Concertante and the four flute quartets. Commissioned by the Dutch physician and amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean, Mozart wrote his two solo concertos in 1777/78 during a stay in Mannheim. As the middle movement of the Concerto in G major KV 313 supposedly was too difficult for the client – with regard to the playing technique and/or music – the composer wrote an alternative version, 'Andante' KV 315 (285e). This nice individual movement is now presented in a carefully edited new edition, with a cadenza of the editor – a serenade-like setting that offers the soloist many possibilities for cantabile playing. Here, the famous main theme is arranged for Solo Flute and Piano, directly from the orchestral score. The first performance of the ballet in Moscow in 1877 was not well received. The production was fraught with disagreements between choreographer and composer; the Russian audience were suspicious of the story’s Germanic origins and the music was regarded as too complex for ballet. Tchaikovsky did not live to see a triumphant revival production in 1895 that confirmed Swan Lake as one of the greatest ballet scores of all. Included in the single download are six pages of piano score and a separate two-page part for the solo instrument. The short sample here and the full length version on the youtube link are from the Clarinet version of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; the accompaniment is challenging in parts, with tremolos and rich chords. Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and the solo part explores a wide range of the instrument.
