Once in motion, the seeds travel with the wind until they come to a final resting place on the ground below. This piece flows along in that vein of a seedling's windblown journey.Dandelion Wind has a slight Celtic feel to it, and it comes in at just over 1:30 if played at the suggested tempo. The piece is in A major and the melody goes above and below the break - break exercise. The accompaniment part has many repeated notes - tonguing exercise. The melody and accompaniment are evenly spread between the two parts and require good co-ordination between the players - rhythm exercise. Although the tune is relatively simple, there are some quite challenging off beats, so it would suit intermediate rather than beginner students. Both parts are on the same sheet and are very clearly laid out with rehearsal marks and written indications of the form - Verse / Chorus etc. There is some information on the page such as staccato notes and phrase marks but it is ultimately a fun piece which can be played freely - as long as there is a good strong feeling of pulse.

The 15 Two-Part Inventions BWV 772-786, arranged for Clarinet & Bass Clarinet. The historical context of Bach's 15 Two-Part Inventions is rooted in their didactic purpose and significance in developing keyboard technique and musical expression. Composed around 1720, these pieces were part of Bach's Klavierbüchlein, a collection of 62 short works for keyboard compiled for his nine-year-old son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The Inventions were designed as exercises to teach two-part playing, familiarize students with musical ideas, and provide a taste of composition. They were structured with care, with the first three based on scales, the following three on broken chords, and a combination of both in the final piece, almost resembling a fugue in form. ISBN 9790570484225.This piece was written many years ago while I was a student at the Royal College of Music, but it received its first professional performance in 2014, in a concert at St. John's Smith Square. It falls into two strongly contrasted sections, each with its own character. The opening Andante should be played as smoothly as possible, and requires careful control of dynamics and intonation, as well as a perfect blend of tone; the Allegro is full of exuberant energy, and needs clear articulation and rhythmic precision. The 1st and 2nd clarinet parts are quite equal with the material divided evenly between them, so that the piece is suitable for two players of similar standard, and should appeal to a wide range of clarinettists. I hope you enjoy playing 'Tones for Two'!
