David McKeown #3222137. Published by David McKeown (A0.587374). Le Cygne, or The Swan, is the penultimate movement of Camille Saint-Saens’ 1886 suite, Carnival of the Animals. Most often played as a solo piece for cello with piano, the original version was scored for solo instrument and two pianos. It was the only movement for the Carnival that the composer allowed to be heard in public during his lifetime. This version is arranged as a duet for two Clarinets. Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The melody is expressive and legato; the accompaniment is challenging in its constant semiquaver arpeggios. The overall performance time is around three minutes. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with expressive playing. The legato in both parts demand precise fingers. This trio composed in 1801 for two violas and cello has been arranged for two clarinets in Bb & bassoon or cello. It has been undeservedly ignored because the original trio combination never really 'caught on'. The four movements, Allegro moderato, Andantino grazioso, Menuetto & Trio and Rondo a la Burlesca provide advanced intermediate players and above with a gem of a concert piece. The final movement is a homage to Mozart (cf. Rondo a la Turka) and concludes with a lovely quote from the Magic Flute.

It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films.This version for Clarinet Duet includes all four sections of the original composition. Piper Publications #6373441. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811804). The Duet, one of three originally written for 2 violas, was not published during W. F. Bach's life time. It is arranged for two clarinets in A but can also be played on Bb clarinets. The three movements composed during the late Baroque period are more Classical in style. The opening Allegro is followed by Lamento in triple time with long flowing overlapping phrases providing innovative harmonies worthy of the eldest son of J. S. Bach. The final movement, Presto is a delightful 6-8 romp. Players of advanced intermediate standard and above will enjoy this.
