Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 4 pages. Phil Beaman #3383081. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844461). This beautiful tune was written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1845. He titled it Moderato in Bm when it was first published as Op 67 No 5 in a volume of his Songs Without Words. It was often referred to as Heide Lied , a type of pastoral German folk song. Another title derived from that is Song of the Heather. Many current editions give it the title The Shepherd's Complaint. Â This instrumental duet arrangement takes a Romantic piece and sets it in 2 part writing. Even without the chords it is still very rich in sound and Romantic in feel. The metre is always in 3 even when the phrasing looks to be in 2; except for a section near the end where I have strayed from the original Mendelssohn and clearly marked Part II with tenutos to be in 2 against Part I in 3. I have also changed phrasing and articulation for more contrast between the two parts. This arrangement is faithful to the spirit of Mendelssohn yet freshens this beautiful old melody. The notes and rhythms are quite easy to play but I have marked it Early Intermediate because so much could be done with phrasing, articulation, and expression that would make this sound like a much more advanced piece. A great Romantic repertoire piece for students. For 2 Altos or 2 Tenors. (2 page score, 1 page Parts)

Duration: 11 - 12 minutes, 18 pp. Description: In Korneitchouk's mischievously titled quasi-concerto for saxophone and orchestra, The Disqualification of Harry Semantix as Trial Juror for East County, the concept of Truth and Lie is explored musically, as well as metaphorically implying something deeper. The Truth (the opening theme after an introduction pieces it together) is slowly mutated into its opposite, the Lie -- upside down, backward, twice as long and strident (the closing theme just before the double cadenza at the end of the piece). The double cadenza, is in fact a cadenza for the saxophone played over a wild orchestral stretto -- a kind of orchestral cadenza -- both simultaneously intoning bits and pieces of either theme, and seems to ask: Can Truth coexist with its Lie? or perhaps, Can Truth exist without its Lie?The first incarnation of The Disqualification of Harry... (available on CD from Old King Cole Productions) appears as a duo for saxophone and piano and has only more recently been orchestrated. The composer tells us that the idea for this piece initially germinated from his own frustrations of having to serve jury duty and being disqualified as a potential juror for answering honestly during jury selection. East County is to be understood as Any County. Separate sax part included.

Hence the martial references in this text, sung to a tune that is perhaps even older than the verses. Georges Bizet, composer of the opera Carmen, used the same tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L’Arlesienne (The Woman from Aries). The Parade of the Tin Soldiers (Die Parade der Zinnsoldaten), also known as The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, is an instrumental musical character piece, in the form of a popular jaunty march, written by German composer Leon Jessel, in 1897.The Parade of the Tin Soldiers was originally composed for solo piano. Jessel later published it for orchestra in 1905, as Opus 123. Today, it is also a popular tune for marching bands, concert bands, and small orchestras, and for extremely diverse alternate instrumentations as well.Since the early 1920s, the piece has been very popular in the U.S., and has also been frequently performed and recorded worldwide. A song, The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, was also created from the piece in 1922, with English lyrics by Ballard MacDonald.The song is often performed around the Christmas holiday season. Born on February 23, 1924, in La Flèche, Jacques Bouillault was 21 years old when, in 1945, he met the Marquise Hélène Rola de Rosycki, who settled him in a forest lodge located southeast of the town, on the Tertre-Rouge hill. Initially, he established himself there as a naturalist-taxidermist. His preserved animals were joined by live ones: birds, foxes, reptiles, rodents... In 1955, the filmmaker Marco de Gastyne made a short film about Bouillault and his zoological park entitled Homme, Notre Ami (Man, Our Friend), with music by Germaine Tailleferre, who was particularly drawn to animals.The « Singes » (Monkeys) sequence is intended to illustrate the capers and other playful activities of these primates in a rather humorous manner.
