Grá, (Irish for Love), is a beautiful original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Alto Saxophones.
This duet is inspired by the Irish sean-nós style of singing. Originally sung unaccompanied in the Irish Gaelic language, in more recent times the melodies have been adapted as instrumentals, harmonised and given accompaniment. The songs are most often about love and loss and Grá aims to capture this melancholy mood.
Grá is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. Expressive throughout, the first part of the melody is played above a drone. Simple accompaniment then builds towards a climax before the melody slips away like a distant echo. Players can add their own appropriate ornaments and variations to the melody if they wish. Samba de Simão is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Alto Saxophones.
This duet is based on the style of Samba. With roots in West African music, modern Samba emerged in Rio de Janiero, Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century. There are many forms, both sung and instrumental, and the Samba rhythm has found its way around the world into jazz and modern electronic pop and dance music. Samba has become a cultural symbol of Brazil, with Rio’s famous Samba schools producing theatrical and ultra-professional showpieces for the annual carnival.
If you play to an advanced intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated, the melody should always flow, the two underlying strong beats in each bar should always be felt, and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. It starts off 'straight' (A), alternating between primarily 3/4 and 4/4, then moves into a cool 'swing' (B), followed by a repeat of 'A' and 'B' with some interesting variations, then one more repeat of the 'A' section before culminating in a captivating coda. Rhythmically, a little tricky, but the metre changes feel quite natural. Great piece foir solo/ensemble, recital, concert. Intermediate. Anthony Giamanco is a member of ASCAP. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844613). Two people are playing a spirited games of marbles. The energetic music (Vivace) goes back and forth between the two players. Drama builds. Then an Andante Espressivo section as the victorious player pauses to admire the beauty of the striped marble he has just won. Then Round 2 in the dominant key and another striped marble in the bag. A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction. The notes and rhythms are quite easy. (Some might find a slight challenge in the 1 1/2 octave range or the quick tempo). The interest comes from the contrasting sections; energy vs espressivo, vivace vs andante, detached vs slurred. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for two Alto Saxophones. The words and music of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song in 1865 and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. This easy arrangement for alto sax duet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.
