O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is one of the better-known hymns that is typically sung during the Christmas season. What some may not know is that it originated in the Middle Ages, around A.D. 800, as an antiphon, or anthem, that was restructured into verse form in the 1100's and was eventually published in Latin in 1710. The hymn was later discovered, translated, and published in 1851 by John Mason Neale, an Anglican minister. This arrangement for flute / clarinet duet is written in e minor at the Intermediate Level. Calypso d’Isaac is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Clarinet.This duet is written in the style of Calypso music. Calypso’s roots lie in West Africa but first appeared in recognisable form in the late 19th century in Trinidad. Originally sung in French Creole, the music quickly spread throughout the Caribbean and Venezuela. The modern English-language Trinidadian style is often topical and political in content. Calypso performers such as Mighty Sparrow in turn have inspired new styles such as Ska, Reggae and Soca, while Calypso rhythms can be heard in countless international hits such as Mary’s Boy Child and Disney’s Under the Sea. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Following the articulation in the score will help convey the relaxed but rhythmic style. Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Clarinet. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Both parts play the melody. The overall performance time is around four and a half minutes. The sample recording is from the Clarinet and Alto Saxophone version of this duet. The full length youtube performance is of the Clarinet version. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with phrasing and expressive playing. The rhythms are straightforward though there are extended triplet quaver arpeggios which will pose a challenge for finger coordination and breathing.
