Published by David McKeown (A0.587415). Probably the best known of Scott Joplin’s piano rags, The Entertainer was written in 1902. It was included on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and an orchestration featured on the soundtrack of the movie The Sting in 1973. This arrangement won an Oscar and reached No.3 on the US single charts. This version has been arranged as a duet for two Violas and includes all four sections of the original composition. The full length youtube performance and the short audio sample are both from the Clarinet version of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Given the tensions between the US and Cuba, there have been accusations of cultural appropriation and Cubans dislike the word Salsa, but there is no denying the music’s worldwide appeal. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844454). A Siciliano is based on a graceful rustic dance of Sicily, and is considered a type of Pastorale. The Siciliano style always has dotted rhythms. It is normally in compound time, but I have changed it here to make it more accessible for beginners. This arrangement is based on the opening theme from Voluntary II for Organ by John Alcock, Jr. Mr. Alcock was an organist from the Classical Period and this piece is a great example of the Classical characteristics with a lyrical melody of light elegance.The two parts, which each stay within the range of 1 octave, are equally balanced, playing in parallel thirds much of the time, and the rest of the time playing off of each other in tight ensemble work. This makes a great recital piece to develop your melodic tone and showcase the melodies of the Classical Period.
