Little is known of the origins of Just a Closer Walk With Thee, other than it was sung in African-American churches in the nineteenth century. National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience. Many versions were recorded in the 1940s and Just a Closer Walk With Thee was quickly adopted as a standard by the New Orleans Jazz revival.Just a Closer Walk With Thee is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Calypso d’Isaac is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for two Violas.This duet is written in the style of Calypso music. Calypso’s roots lie in West Africa but first appeared in recognisable form in the late 19th century in Trinidad. Originally sung in French Creole, the music quickly spread throughout the Caribbean and Venezuela. The modern English-language Trinidadian style is often topical and political in content. Calypso performers such as Mighty Sparrow in turn have inspired new styles such as Ska, Reggae and Soca, while Calypso rhythms can be heard in countless international hits such as Mary’s Boy Child and Disney’s Under the Sea. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Following the articulation in the score will help convey the relaxed but rhythmic style. Born in Lvov, and after a short period in the Russian army, Kandel emigrated to the USA in 1905 and quickly found work as a clarinettist in vaudeville, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show and JP Sousa’s band. A brief but productive period as band-leader and recording artist followed, after which Kandel retired from performing to run a music shop.Kandel’s Hora is arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Hava Nagila was originally a Nigun melody thought to have originated in the Ukraine. In 1918 a professor and musicologist at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Abraham Zevi Idelsohn, set the tune to words adapted from Psalm 118. Hava Nagila was first performed at celebrations at the end of the Great War and quickly spread throughout the Jewish diaspora. In the fifties and sixties, performances by singers as diverse as Harry Belafonte and Bob Dylan popularised the song far beyond its original Jewish audience. Hava Nagila remains one of the best-known and loved Klezmer standards today, traditionally performed at Jewish celebrations.Hava Nagila is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. Two people are playing a spirited games of marbles. The energetic music (Vivace) goes back and forth between the two players. Drama builds. Then an Andante Espressivo section as the victorious player pauses to admire the beauty of the striped marble he has just won. Then Round 2 in the dominant key and another striped marble in the bag. A Recapitulation and a Picardy Third conclude the game with satisfaction. The notes and rhythms are quite easy. (Some might find a slight challenge in the 1 1/2 octave range or the quick tempo). The interest comes from the contrasting sections; energy vs espressivo, vivace vs andante, detached vs slurred. The origins of the word Bop lie in the scat language of the ‘40s; Bop quickly became associated with the fast Bebop jazz of the period as musicians vocalised the offbeat rhythms of their angular melodies. Later in the ‘50s when Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll first appeared, Bop was used to describe both the dance moves and the dance venues themselves.
