Some interpretation symbols where used in the score, they are mere personal suggestions. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. The bowing is very often simply used as a reference to musical legato. The staccato is meant to shorten the length of the notes to half of its duration and is often used to simplify the righting and the reading of the score. The inspiring poem by Sidney Lanier titled Into the Woods My Master Went has been set to a variety of tunes. This string duet arrangement (for VIOLIN and CELLO) uses the hymn tune by Peter C. Lutkin. Set in a minor key, the solemn, reflective melody matches the deeply thought-provoking lyrics (see below). Though the lyrics may seem archaic at first, by reading through the words and meditating on the meaning, the beauty of the message becomes clear. This song is especially suited for a prelude or offertory during the season of Lent and Easter.Verse 1 Into the woods my Master went, Clean forspent, forspent, Into the woods my Master came, Forspent with love and shame. It certainly answers the complaints of cellists their 8 note part is not complex enough.
