This is a 5.0 marimba arrangement of Pat Metheny's solo baritone guitar rendition of Last Train Home as recorded on the album, One Quiet Night. It is transposed up a minor third (to the key of Ab major from F major) in order to accommodate the lowest notes of the baritone guitar (A1) on the 5.0 marimba (C2). Perhaps someday someone will make a 5.3 octave version of this in Metheny's original key. During the pandemic, I have deliberately chosen to take a deeper look at some of the music that moves me deeply. When I was a kid my next neighbor, Bob Holt, happened to be the local college music professor. He introduced me to a lot of wonderful music, including Pat Methenyâ€™s album â€œStill Life Talking,â€ which features the song, â€œLast Train Home.â€ In 2003, Metheny released a solo baritone guitar album, â€œOne Quiet Night,â€ on which â€œLast Train Homeâ€ makes a re-appearance. Iâ€™ve always thought that this version of the tune would make a great marimba project.

The marimba piece All Good Things Start With a Dream comes from seeing the sunrise and sunset across many places in the United States during Ohio Northernâ€™s National Singers Tour of 2016. As I was sitting in the back of our hostâ€™s car, my friend Shawn was talking to our gracious host about his aspirations of becoming a teacher even though he was starting later in life. During the conversation, we were driving across the prairie to the home we would be staying in. As our host said, Follow your dreams, and your life will never be boring Shawn replied, Oh definitely. I believe that all good things start with a dream. That is the inspiration for this piece. Sunrise, inspiration, and a dream.

Key: C major.Open Mic Funk III is the third funk I pre-wrote on Tuesday, 12 March 2024 at the open mic night at F.E. Pop's in Florence, South Carolina. It's a playful marimba trio that is more modern classical in nature than it is, strictly speaking, funk. Still, it's one of my favorite tracks, and the sixteenth-note syncopation and layered marimbas make for a truly unique piece.
