This intense mallet solo uses mixed meter to evoke an exciting and slightly chaotic of the climax of a town celebration. Each section embodies a different group of people celebrating and dancing in their own unique style, as if the audience were in the center of the dance looking around at the variety of cultures contained in the festival. Moonlight Festival Dances is an original piece that encompasses a variety of emotions and tones and requires the player to swiftly change between time signatures, styles and keys.Suitable for 3-octave marimba, xylophone or vibes; 2-mallets, unaccompanied.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977026). This piece was composed for percussionist Kevin Romanski, who also provided advice on some technical matters. The title refers to its initial inspiration: the contemplation of different color combinations of the notes in a C13 chord. In terms of character, it begins with a slow meditative repetition of two melodic ideas. One is played as single-handed rolls by the right-hand while the other is a slowly developing melody played by the left-hand. Because the phrases of these two ideas do not align, their interaction creates a kaleidoscopic shifting of harmonic colors. A faster middle section continues developing both the harmonic and rhythmic interaction between the two hands, but in a more active and syncopated way. After a series of dramatic outbursts, the original meditative quality returns and the piece ends quietly with a return of material from the first section.

Tapping your feet to the rhythm is simply not acceptable. But I’ve always thought that classical music could be danceable - something that DJs can play at a club and you can move your body to.≪Tree dance≫, as the title suggests, is a musical piece featuring marimba and piano expressing the way trees dance in the wind. The music is almost like the classical version of craftwork, combining four-on-the-floor beats of techno music with the sharp sounds of modern music and organic poetry.I hope that the colorful musical notes on the score will be given life to and grow in this concert hall, creating a feast of dancing trees. The piece draws its inspiration from the biblical verse, Psalms 22:1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? and the same verse quoted by Jesus while he was on the cross in both Matthew and Mark-Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?. This is one of the last seven sayings of Christ before his death on the cross. Some will interpret this saying as words of Abandonment of the Son by the Father. God has left his son to die in pain at the hands of humanity as a sacrifice for their sins.

This set of music for Marimba is based my Twenty Etudes For Guitar. Both being polyphonic instruments the guitar and the marimba are certainly distant cousins so I believe the essence of works for one instrument can be expressed on the other, in either direction. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for marimba I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual percussionist and teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. He also studied extensively with Sharon Isbin and Sal Salvador. Based in Connecticut, he is active as a soloist and in the chamber music scene.
