Forsaken is a 5-octave, unaccompanied marimba solo. The piece draws its inspiration from the biblical verse, Psalms 22:1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? and the same verse quoted by Jesus while he was on the cross in both Matthew and Mark-Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?. This is one of the last seven sayings of Christ before his death on the cross. Some will interpret this saying as words of Abandonment of the Son by the Father. God has left his son to die in pain at the hands of humanity as a sacrifice for their sins.

Dan HeslinkThis medley combines three of the most favored Carols celebrating the miracle of Christ’s birth. Angels We Have Heard On High encapsulates the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke. The flowing second part of this carol portrays the shepherds’ wonder as they encounter a multitude of angels singing and praising. The spiritual renewal brought about by the birth of the Christ child is given in What Child Is This? Sung to the tune of the traditional English song Greensleeves, its haunting quality has made it one of the most popular of Christmas carols. And focusing on the immediacy of the Child’s entrance into the world, Away in a Manger has become the most loved of all American Christmas carols. The medley opens with an eight-measure introduction that immediately establishes the Christmas spirit, and then moves on to Angels We Have Heard on High. The binary form of this section should suggest to the performers two contrasting manners of execution, one involving brisk, rhythmic strokes and the other more legato in nature. At the second indicated rehearsal number What Child Is This? introduces a new key and new meter for new melodic content. The score shapes these phrases with dynamic changes, which should be observed with care. The dynamic arches and divided eighth note passages will enhance the impetus of a rolling ternary meter The medley’s final selection, Away in a Manger, begins at measure sixty-seven. A light and delicate approach to execution should create an innocent, child-like characterization. The final cadence of this selection is expanded to a bolder conclusion. Players and conductor may wish to experiment with a dead stroke on the last soft note, to artistically suggest that the music may be experienced for a moment even after it is concluded. This medley will be especially effective programmed on a winter holiday concert. Duration is 2:21. It is said that when an earthquake occurs, trees grow well.Though there is no evidence, the vibration of the earthquake seems to stir and condition the soil.Even through unprecedented disasters when the earth is cracked and the city is burnt, and even when people suffer from helplessness and anger, the trees (including apricot and blackberry branches) grow unaffectedly.Inger Christensen, the author of the poetry collection 'Alphabet', through her perceptive and lyrical senses, expressed that human beings are not managers of nature.On a lonely night, all we hear is the sound of crawling roots underneath the earth and rhythmic breathing of branches and leaves.....Not a few people consider classical music as something you listen to quietly while frowning. Tapping your feet to the rhythm is simply not acceptable. But I’ve always thought that classical music could be danceable - something that DJs can play at a club and you can move your body to.≪Tree dance≫, as the title suggests, is a musical piece featuring marimba and piano expressing the way trees dance in the wind. The music is almost like the classical version of craftwork, combining four-on-the-floor beats of techno music with the sharp sounds of modern music and organic poetry.I hope that the colorful musical notes on the score will be given life to and grow in this concert hall, creating a feast of dancing trees. This is a 5.0 marimba arrangement of Pat Metheny's solo baritone guitar rendition of Last Train Home as recorded on the album, One Quiet Night. It is transposed up a minor third (to the key of Ab major from F major) in order to accommodate the lowest notes of the baritone guitar (A1) on the 5.0 marimba (C2). Perhaps someday someone will make a 5.3 octave version of this in Metheny's original key. During the pandemic, I have deliberately chosen to take a deeper look at some of the music that moves me deeply. When I was a kid my next neighbor, Bob Holt, happened to be the local college music professor. He introduced me to a lot of wonderful music, including Pat Metheny’s album “Still Life Talking,†which features the song, “Last Train Home.†In 2003, Metheny released a solo baritone guitar album, “One Quiet Night,†on which “Last Train Home†makes a re-appearance. I’ve always thought that this version of the tune would make a great marimba project.

Published by Neal Fitzpatrick Editions (A0.955427). This is Impromptu No.16 For Marimba From Twenty Impromptus For Marimba by Neal Fitzpatrick. This set of music for Marimba is based my Twenty Etudes For Guitar. Both being polyphonic instruments the guitar and the marimba are certainly distant cousins so I believe the essence of works for one instrument can be expressed on the other, in either direction. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for marimba I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual percussionist and teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. He also studied extensively with Sharon Isbin and Sal Salvador. Based in Connecticut, he is active as a soloist and in the chamber music scene.
