Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL (simple) SONG I WROTE FOR MY MOM AND SISTER To be clear, it is a prayer written in musical form. I guess that makes it a psalm. A few nights ago I was feeling the pain of so many people around the globe who are suffering due to the pandemic. I was inspired to sit down and write an simple song of comfort for them-for us. The very same evening I started writing the song, unbeknownst to me, my sister was being taken to the hospital where she collapsed of heart failure and was life-flighted to the nearest cardiovascular facility.They put her on life support (ECMO and ventilator) to let her heart and lungs rest. Two days later, due to complications with circulation in her leg she had to be rushed into emergency surgery to pull the catheter from the artery leading to her heart. This required taking her off of life support four days earlier than they had planned. We were informed she may not make it. Thanks to thousands of people praying for her, and her own indomitable spirit, she pulled through-but not without more complications.A fever kicked in and lack of circulation in her other leg caused even more concern. Her heart and body were suffering greatly. As we prayed (and thousands of you from around the world prayed with us) I kept massaging and nuancing the exact melody line I wanted, at the same time interweaving various lyrics to intuit what felt right. I wanted this to be a song anyone could sing for their beloved family member or friend who was struggling. Every note, every syllable had to land just right-as if it was meant to be.Through all this my mother was going through her own bit of personal anguish. We were basically waiting for my sister to die. Due to COVID regulations nobody, not even family, could visit her in ICU. My mother bought a plane ticket... just in case. We hoped beyond hope that, If she died, she would not die alone. I wanted to finish this song by Mother's Day to share with my mother and my dear struggling sister who is also a mother of 5. I finished it and sang it through tears on Mother's Day. I have many friends show speak Spanish who are going through very difficult times due to COVID-19 and the subsequent quarantine. The second time through is a carefully crafted Spanish translation. I hope to hear people singing this far and wide with, to and for each other.

When an acquaintance of mine, Gay Tregaskis, sent me a poem she’d written and told me the story behind it, I was honored to be able to put her beautiful and touching words to music. The story is best told in her own words: When I was expecting my first baby, I wanted an antique rocking chair. I found one listed in the newspaper that said, ‘old, but loved.’ I remember going to look at it with my husband in November. It was old and worn… the seat springs were broken, the fabric was faded and torn. I loved it! We bought it for a forgotten amount and my sweet mother-in-law had it repaired and re-upholstered for my Christmas gift. Our little son was born on January 31st. I spent hours and hours just rocking God’s little miracle. On Mother’s Day that year, I woke up and just began writing. There were only one or two lines I shifted. It felt like all the babes and parents who ever sat in the old chair wanted me and mommies-to-be to understand the precious moments spent rocking and bonding. It still brings tears to my eyes. These words are a gift given to me for my children and all who they touch. Our moments to share pass on fleet feet… especially with our children. Mary, Did You Know? - Arrangement for Voice, Piano and Guitar by Michael Thomas CoullMary, Did You Know? is a song addressing Mary, the mother of the Saviour, with lyrics written by Mark Lowry in 1984, and music by Buddy Greene in 1991.  It was originally recorded by singer Michael English and released on his self-titled debut solo album in 1991.  At the time, English and Lowry were members of the 'Gaither Vocal Band', and Greene was touring with them.  The song reached Number 6 on CCM Magazine's Adult Contemporary Chart.  Lowry would record the song several times himself, most notably with the Gaither Vocal Band on their 1998 album, Still the Greatest Story Ever Told. The song has since gone on to become a modern classic, recorded by hundreds of artists over the years, across multiple genres.  Several recordings have reached the top ten in the Billboard R&B and Holiday charts.This arrangement of Mary, Did You Know? is based on the version that popular American singer/songwriter Gary Chapman recorded for his album This Gift in 1997.
