I wrote this reconciliation hymn back in 2016, when elders from the Blood Tribe, Metis, Piikani, and Siksika nations of Southern Alberta led the Reconciliation Week events at Medicine Hat College, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. They invited me to write and teach this hymn as part of the sessions at MHC, where I was (then) the ecumenical Chaplain. It has been an honour to participate in this annual tradition of indigenous leaders sharing their distinctive cultural practices, traditions, and values with the public in Medicine Hat (and the surrounding communities) for a decade, now. During the session I was asked to assist with, the Elders were sharing the Seven Grandfathers' Teachings, and so I included these core values into the lyrics of the hymn. The work in Medicine Hat started with expressions of lament and support from a group of local churches and the Medicine Hat College Chaplaincy program while the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was crossing the country. We quickly realized that many non-indigenous Canadians genuinely wanted to learn more about their First Nations, Metis, and Inuit neighbours. Seeing an urgent need for greater awareness about the intergenerational damage that was done by the Indian Residential School system here in Canada, and also identifying these Reconciliation events as a way to decrease racist stereotypes and assumptions about indigenous peoples, we decided to continue offering an annual reconciliation session, which grew, year by year. A decade later, I'm delighted to have seen deeper, healthier relationships being built between indigenous and non-indigenous people. Musically, this hymn loosely imitates the style of the French Canadian Voyageurs, the folk melodies of the 18th and 19th centuries. The lyrics incorporate the Seven Grandfathers' Teachings. This core ethical framework has many different versions, but many First Nations communities have adopted these teachings in some form. (I've heard Elders say that Respect must come first, because it is the foundation that we build on, but for this particular group at Medicine Hat College, Humility was first on the list). I have Metis ancestry myself, and as an adult, I have researched the long-hidden genealogical and cultural treasures of my family tree. Whether you are an indigenous person looking to support other indigenous Christian composers, or whether you are a non-indigenous person who is trying to broaden the repertoire of your congregation, We Must Learn to Walk Together is an upbeat, hope-filled hymn that sings about reconciliation as if it is not only possible in the distant future - but also achievable today, using the concrete steps suggested by the lyrics. The indigenous wisdom of the Seven Grandfathers' Teachings lines up beautifully with the teachings of Christ. Musically, this hymn is highly accessible for congregational singing; the range is moderate and the rhythms provide musical interest without becoming overly complex; to hear the guitar version and melody line of the hymn being played and sung by the composer, please go to the following YouTube link: https://youtu.be/3DpkFCLxgEs. The musical format of the hymn alternates between the chorus and three verses. The piece takes roughly 3:30 to perform. This hymn has been transcribed in the key of C Major, so it is as easy as possible for church accompanists to play and for congregations to sing; guitarists are invited to play in the key of A Major and simply capo 3. Guitar chords are included. I hope and pray that this hymn for reconciliation will help you, your congregation, and the wider community to think about, pray for, and enact the calls to action of the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission in new and deeper ways this year.

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL (simple) SONG I WROTE FOR MY MOM AND SISTER To be clear, it is a prayer written in musical form. I guess that makes it a psalm. A few nights ago I was feeling the pain of so many people around the globe who are suffering due to the pandemic. I was inspired to sit down and write an simple song of comfort for them-for us. The very same evening I started writing the song, unbeknownst to me, my sister was being taken to the hospital where she collapsed of heart failure and was life-flighted to the nearest cardiovascular facility.They put her on life support (ECMO and ventilator) to let her heart and lungs rest. Two days later, due to complications with circulation in her leg she had to be rushed into emergency surgery to pull the catheter from the artery leading to her heart. This required taking her off of life support four days earlier than they had planned. We were informed she may not make it. Thanks to thousands of people praying for her, and her own indomitable spirit, she pulled through-but not without more complications.A fever kicked in and lack of circulation in her other leg caused even more concern. Her heart and body were suffering greatly. As we prayed (and thousands of you from around the world prayed with us) I kept massaging and nuancing the exact melody line I wanted, at the same time interweaving various lyrics to intuit what felt right. I wanted this to be a song anyone could sing for their beloved family member or friend who was struggling. Every note, every syllable had to land just right-as if it was meant to be.Through all this my mother was going through her own bit of personal anguish. We were basically waiting for my sister to die. Due to COVID regulations nobody, not even family, could visit her in ICU. My mother bought a plane ticket... just in case. We hoped beyond hope that, If she died, she would not die alone. I wanted to finish this song by Mother's Day to share with my mother and my dear struggling sister who is also a mother of 5. I finished it and sang it through tears on Mother's Day. I have many friends show speak Spanish who are going through very difficult times due to COVID-19 and the subsequent quarantine. The second time through is a carefully crafted Spanish translation. I hope to hear people singing this far and wide with, to and for each other.

David gets to see the major events of his life with the help of his guardian angel, Gabrielle. This manner of storytelling combines elements of It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, and the old TV show This Is Your Life. Each event in David’s life is told through a song. It was originally written as a VBS (Vacation Bible School) musical. Although everyone in Israel is singing his praises, David questions the purpose of his life. Gabrielle shows him that everyone’s life is important, and that the good things that we do are like seeds planted along the way, which may not sprout and grow until much later. After reviewing his past, David is given a glimpse of the future, and realizes that he is one of many who are preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ. The musical is based on the stories from the Bible, mainly from 1 and 2 Samuel, but also including a Psalm and a geneaology listing from Matthew. David throws in a couple of bad puns as he tries to understand what Gabrielle is trying to tell him. The accompaniment is written for piano, but is appropriate for a praise team or a small dance band. The styles are quite varied, including cha-cha, pop, bossa nova, ballad, dirge, blues, jazz, and waltz. The piano accompaniment could be supplemented by percussion instruments (tambourine, maracas, woodblock, cowbell, etc.), as well as guitar, saxophone, and drums. The songs are at an Easy Intermediate level. The only stage requirements are a small balcony or elevated level with a railing or fence, and a floor area for the chorus. The musical consists of 10 scenes, but the two narrator characters remain on the balcony, and the floor area only needs to be changed in case the chorus members use different costumes and/or props for the different scenes. This is one of my favourite Elton John tunes. I'm also a big fan of the music of Scott Joplin and thought it would be interesting to play Elton John's 'Daniel' in a ragtime style. I have actually used techniques that were post Joplin but it still has a strong ragtime feel and is a lot of fun to play.I have taken it through the keys of C major and Db major. There are a number of tenths in the left hand. These may be difficult for those with smaller hands but they can be rolled or replaced with a single root note or octave.I don't include dynamics, fingering or pedal markings and prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two piano teachers can agree on this. I like to give the notes to the reader as simply as possible and another shortcut I often use is to write for example quavers/eight notes even when the notes should be longer. Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. In liturgical churches, it functions beautifully as a congregational sung response following the Prayers of the People (or even replacing the Prayers of the People). In evangelical settings, it can be sung as a stand-alone worship hymn right after the sermon, or as part of a set of worship songs at the beginning or conclusion of the service. I am a prolific songwriter, and I've been writing music for 35+ years now. Through all of those years, there have only been a handful of occasions where I have felt more like a conduit of the Holy Spirit than the composer of the hymn; this was definitely one of those times. This is Our Prayer is written in the key of F Major, making it highly accessible for beginning church accompanists. It has a moderate tempo, set in a 3/4 time signature with a lilting rhythm. The vocal range is designed for robust congregational singing. The melody line is just one octave, ranging from Middle C to the C above it; the Alto line is just a six note range, from Middle C to the A above. This score includes the piano accompaniment in a strophic, hymn style format, two-part vocal harmony, and guitar chords (which can also assist pianists who play by chord + melody line, instead of by reading the score). The simplicity of this hymn does not detract from its' beauty, however. This is a highly singable, memorable tune with some interesting rhythmic patterns. The lyrics of this hymn are loosely based on Romans 12:12-21 (As far as it depends upon you, live at peace with all people). The words of the hymn are truly a prayer, asking God for peace, but they also remind us that as people of faith, we are invited to participate WITH God in the process of making peace on earth, by how we pray, live, give, and place our trust in God. One lyric reads that we dare to pray for peace; this is an intentional choice on my part, flagging the potential costliness of becoming people who prioritize peace. The week this hymn was released to Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music Unlimited, Reverbnation, and Deezer, it debuted at #30 on the Top 100 Contemporary Christian Music Charts on Spotify. The YouTube video version of the hymn (link attached below) was viewed over 7,000 times in the first ten days, by people in over 40 countries. You are welcome to stream it for worship services, on church websites, and on social media. The more people view it, the more ad revenue it will generate, and all profits from the sale of this hymn in any form (video ad revenue, digital MP3 sales on the sites listed above, and the sale of this musical score) will be donated to the Red Cross and the United Church of Canada's Mission & Service Fund; both of these registered charities have targeted programs running to assist Ukrainians who've been displaced by the war. Once the Ukrainian war ends, I will continue to send all profits from the hymn to those same charities to help refugees in other conflict zones. May this hymn comfort and discomfort you. Machine Echo has been in the making for a couple of years, it was the first song that I created that I could say, a song, it has been one that I can play over and over, I even presented it to others of great standing, look I can create music, but I am not sure if then, can compare with where I am at now. The length of the sheet music is 6-10 minutes depending on how you play it. The MP3 Clip previewing the sheet music, this song, I played it for about 10 minutes. The YouTube video is about 10 minutes as well.
