Thanks, John. When a Man Loves a Woman is a song written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright and first recorded by Percy Sledge in 1966 at Norala Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama.  It made number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts.  Country singer John Wesley Ryles had a minor hit with his version of the song in 1976 while singer and actress Bette Midler recorded the song 14 years later and had a Top 40 hit with her version in 1990.  In 1991, Michael Bolton recorded the song and his version peaked at number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the Billboard Adult Contemporary Singles chart.

PIANO VOCAL SCORE.  This four act contemporary opera, original libretto and music, by 21st century American composer James Nathaniel Holland is the story of the triumph of Love over Evil, however delayed, and the power of keeping steadfast to one’s righteous promise.  Based on the German fairy tale The Six Swans, in a kingdom, during Saxon times, the murderous daughter of an evil entity, Ravia, infiltrates and takes over the lives of a royal family due to the King’s rash promise to marry her many years before. The royal children are sent away by their father for safety to a hidden, woodland cottage, but Ravia discovers where they are and hexes the younger siblings, turning them into swallows.  Usha, the eldest, escapes and flees to the wilderness and is visited by the apparition of her dead mother who explains what is going on and that Usha must swear an oath of silence for six years to break the spell and change her siblings back into human form.Five years pass and a dashing and kind king, Rohric, of another kingdom, finds Usha while hunting, falls in love with and marries her, but Usha must remain silent and cannot reveal who she is.  Ravia, who now is sole queen of the old kingdom, is invited by Rohric’s nobles with hope to secure a “proper†wedding for Rohric.  Usha is accused falsely of killing her own child by the two and is sentenced to be burned at the stake, but as the bell tolls she finally can declare her innocence.  To the crowd’s amazement her siblings change back, all truth is revealed, and for Ravia’s failure, she is dragged back to hell by demons.  Singers:  King Alfred (bass), Ravia (soprano), Princess Usha (mezzo), Queen Mother Arna (soprano), the royal siblings (children’s/boy’s chorus), King Rohric (Tenor), The Evil Noble (baritone), An angel/a demon (bass), SATB ChorusScored for full orchestra.  Instrumentation:  picc/treble recorder, fl12, ob12, eh, cl12, bsn12, hrn 123, tpt123, trom12, tba, timp, perc.12 (bd, crash cym, ride cym with soft mallets and stick, glk, chimes, snar, tri), hrp, stringsDuration:  2 hoursFull Orchestral Score (concert pitch), Piano Vocal Score and Instruments Parts 1 (woodwinds, brass, perc.) and Parts 2 (harp and strings) sold separately.

Imogene Coca performed this song in an episode of Your Show of Shows while dressed as a hobo; the audience reaction was so favorable that she encored her version in the last episode of the variety series, making this the only song she performed in two different episodes of Your Show of Shows.

The song was written by group member Graham Russell. Although known primarily for his trumpet playing as the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert sang lead vocals on this solo recording, arranged by Bacharach. The recording originated when Alpert, while visiting at Bacharach's office, asked, Say, Burt, do you happen to have any old compositions lying around that you and Hal never recorded; maybe one I might be able to use? Alpert decided that the song should be released as a single recording, and it reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in June of that year, remaining in the top position for four weeks.

I first conceived of this poem and melody while an undergraduate at Duke Univ, sharing it with a friend who enjoyed the jazz reggae syncopation and melody line as we sang bits of the poem together. The poem is a long popular song, and it took me some time to perfect the intro as it is today. I am very proud of this work, as I believe it is a most original P/V intro to reggae melodies as we know them today. I write this song in honor of Mary, because she is such a genuine Goddess of Creation, the majestic and pure Mother of Jesus who always interacted with others in a straightforward and genuine manner. This song is about perseverance in the face of interpersonal superficiality, and it will take me some more time and effort to differentially cut and paste the strophic nature of the music on Finale. Lágrima (Teardrop) is a romantic prelude for solo guitar by Spanish guitarist Francisco Tárrega. It is one of the best-known original compositions by Tárrega. It has been published by Ildefonso Alier.Analysis:Lágrima is a very short miniature consisting of only 16 bars. It takes around 2 minutes to perform and its tempo marking is andante. It has an A-B-A structure, section A being in E major and B in E minor, and has been overwhelmingly highlighted by critics because of its simplicity and melancholic atmosphere. Each section has 8 bars. Section A consists of a very simple and predictable melody with quarter notes and dotted half notes, while the accompaniment has eighth notes. Section B turns a little bit less predictable but otherwise still very simple, with eighth notes on the main voice. At the end of section B, section A is repeated to close the work.[ As usual in Tárrega's composition, Lágrima bears some technical difficulties in spite of its simplicity.Composed between late 1891 and early 1892, it is one of Tárrega's most performed pieces. Lágrima has not been included in a definitive catalogue of his works. It has been, however, included in other collections of pieces and has been numbered depending on the position in those collections or in recordings.Musical style:Tárrega composed music in the romantic style of 19th-century European masters. His conservatory training and familiarity with contemporary classical genres and techniques are apparent in his compositions and transcriptions; these are more sophisticated than those of Spanish guitarist-composers of the previous generation and his contemporaries, e.g., Magín Alegre, Tomás Damas, Julián Arcas, José Viñas, and José Ferrer.A virtuoso on his instrument, he was known as the Sarasate of the guitar, although Tárrega preferred small intimate performances over the concert stage.Tárrega is considered to have laid the foundations for 20th-century classical guitar and for increasing interest in the guitar as a recital instrument.
