Tully Road Music #934045. Published by Tully Road Music (A0.1349296). Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin (“The Lovely Maid of the Millâ€) was completed in 1823. All 20 songs in the cycle are based on texts by German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller, who would also provide the inspiration for Schubert’s later Winterreise cycle in 1828. The cycle follows the journey of a young wandering miller who falls in love with another miller’s daughter, but his love is ultimately unrequited. In this the eleventh song of the cycle, the young man’s obsession has reached a point of delusion as he brazenly declares to himself that the maiden is “his,†though she has given him almost no reason to feel such confidence in his romantic prospects. He begins lashing out at everything around him for its apparent failure to match or understand his dubious enthusiasm. This arrangement preserves Schubert’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top tenor voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for SSA voices.

It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for two-part (SA) choir or duet, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SA choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for duet. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. Myrthen, or “myrtles,†were the flowers traditionally associated with a marriage celebration. Schumann completed the Myrthen cycle in 1840, totaling 26 Lieder (songs for solo voice and piano), with texts by prominent 19th-century German poets such as Heinrich Heine, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. “Widmung,†which means “Dedication,†is the first song in the cycle, based on a love poem by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). The frequent repetition of the word “you†in the text, along with the soaring melody and undulating arpeggios that comprise the music, all serve to convey the composer’s state of blissful fulfillment as he contemplates marrying his beloved. This arrangement preserves Schumann’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top tenor voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. It was premiered by the Young People’s Chorus of Erie Young Men’s Ensemble at the 2012 World Choir Games. The arrangement is also available in a version for SSA voices.

Balquhidder is an imaginary tale of the early love between the famous Rob Roy MacGregor and his wife, Mary Helen. Rob Roy is sometimes called the Scottish Robin Hood. So, a lovely lady Mary suits the story quite well. Highland Laddie tells the tale of the Jacobite Risings between 1688 and 1746. Through the song we see the Highland soldier marching off in his bonnet blue, tartan plaid, and highland trousers. Laddie comes to a near frenzied ending as a glorious salute to all Scottish Regiments. Also available for SATB, TTBB, and SSAA choirs. Orchestra and Band settings of the accompaniment coming soon.
