Composer’s Note - Treasure ChestI w​as commissioned by the Canberra International Music Festival in 2016 to write a work for children’s chorus. The concert was a Mothers’ Day event, sponsored by a couple of local boutique chocolatiers, so the works on the program were all chocolate and coffee themed, including J S Bach’s Coffee Cantata and a bunch of songs from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The festival’s Artistic Director Roland Peelman asked me if I could write a new piece on this theme.So I got thinking about chocolate and about Mothers’ Day and about how when you’re a little kid and have no earnings, you still give your mum a present for her special day (that is, your dad pays for it and you sign the card!). And if it’s chocolate, you might give her ​your​ favourite chocolate instead of ​hers,​ and all you are really waiting for is for her to offer you one. When I was a child, I always used to think of chocolate boxes as treasure chests, full of shining precious things only consumed on very special occasions. Because they were such a rarity, you really had to savour each sweet taste and gooey texture. I​ ’m sure from this song, you’ll be able to tell that I am a big sweet tooth!-- Sally Whitwell

James Weldon Johnson's poem, The Gift to Sing, set for SA choir by Erik MeyerThis piece encourages singers (especially young ones) to find their own musical voice! It sets Johnson's introspective text about the quiet healing power of music, interspersed with sections for musical improvisation. Singers are welcome to create their own melody while the piano continues to play harmonically. Every voice's heartfelt contribution is valuable and beautiful.I wrote this piece because throughout my career as a choir director, many of my singers have been told me I can't really sing, or so-and-so told me not to sing loud because I'm not good, or I can't improvise, etc. I want this piece to help bring out everyone's voice - no matter what you have been told in the past, you CAN sing, and more than that, I bet you can improvise! I hope this setting will help singers love their voice.

[2 Samuel 12:1-7… - And Yahweh sent Nathan to David. And he came unto him, and said unto him: ‘There were two men in one city: the one rich, and the other poor. 2 The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds; 3 but the poor man had nothing save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and reared; and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own morsel, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. 4 And there came a traveler unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.’ 5 And David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan: ‘As Yahweh lives, the man that hath done this deserves to die; 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.’ 7 And Nathan said to David: ‘You art the man.’…] The news is brought back to DAVID and BATHSHEBA. After an appropriate period of mourning, DAVID calls for BATHSHEBA and takes her as his wife and eventually gives birth to a son. DAVID in the meantime still conceals to himself the actions that precipitated URIAH’S death. NATHAN confronts DAVID about a rich man in the town who has stolen a lamb from a poor man. DAVID outraged at the injustice tells NATHAN that the man will die for his unfeeling actions. NATHAN then reveals that he (DAVID) is that man [There Were Two Men – Nathan and the Prophetess’]. Now at last the matter is exposed and David must face his actions. As NATHAN and the prophets leave, one of DAVID’S men comes in and tells him that his son has died. An easy TB acapella arrangement, the new lyrics are included, however you may easily switch it back to the original Hammerstein lyrics from the New Moon broadway hit of 1928 in the style of a Viennese operetta. This arrangement was written for Blokes Notes, a non-auditioned community male choir in Port Macquarie Australia, raising eyebrows since 2009. 2 pages , approximately 1:30minutes. Easy level.
