Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, published in 1741, remain a central part of Baroque keyboard literature, and like many of Bach's works, they stand as a testament to his seemingly effortless mastery of compositional technique. The piece begins with a simple Aria, built upon the ground bass that serves as the harmonic basis for each of the 30 variations that follow, and ends with a repetition of the Aria, having come full-circle. This arrangement by David Haskins of selections from the Goldberg Variations was commissioned by Andrew McCandless, Principal Trumpet of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and was premiered at the Sun Valley Music Festival. Scored for 12 trumpets in two choirs, this arrangement is intended for advanced performers. Of the 30 original variations, 9 have been included here, presenting a variety of styles that are designed to highlight the lyrical and virtuosic capabilities of the trumpet. This arrangement is scored for a double choir of six performers with the following instrumentation; each 6-part choir consisting of: Piccolo Trumpet in B-flat, Trumpet in E-flat, 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Trumpets in B-flat. One C Trumpet doubles on a rotary and one B-flat Trumpet doubles on Flugelhorn.

Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1088808). This piece is an original arrangement based on the wistful English folk melody 'Barbara Allen'. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for two-part (SA) choir or duet, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SA choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs, as well as for duet. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The solo/unison and 4-part SATB versions of this piece, as well as the solo piano version (Variations on 'Barbara Allen') by the same composer, are also available via Sheet Music Plus. Published by Castleroyan Press (A0.927948). This work originally started life as an unaccompanied SATB carol and was premiered by an ad hoc choir in the village of Shabbington, near Oxford in 1995 . It was subsequently reworked for piano solo (as Cradle Song for Lewis), and also became the basis of a set of variations for French horn and organ with Christmas narration. I produced this arrangement for SS and piano for a Christmas concert in St Albans, given by the Alban Young Singers and Dacorum Junior Singers (conductor, Marie Price) in December 2008.

Die Forelle (D. 550, Op. 32) is among Schubert’s early contributions to the genre of the Lied, a 19th-century German art song for solo voice and piano. Schubert composed over 600 Lieder, and although many of them became popular, Die Forelle was – and still is – one of the most widely recognized and performed. Composed in 1817, Die Forelle takes its text from a 1783 poem of the same name by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart. In it, a casual observer stands on the banks of a tranquil stream, admiring the movements of a “frisky†fish as it darts below the surface. The tone of the music changes when, to the observer’s horror, a fisherman puts an end to both his and the trout’s merriment by snagging the fish on his hook and reeling him in. In a final stanza which Schubert omits from his setting, we learn that Schubart’s poem is actually a metaphorical story intended to warn young women against the trickery of their young male suitors. As in Gretchen am Spinnrade and many other Lieder, Schubert “characterizes†the piano accompaniment, in this case through both the upward-winding sixteenth-note triplets representing the wriggling movements of a fish, and the abrupt shift towards agitated rhythms in measure 33 when the fish is hooked. The song gained such swift popularity that only two years after its composition in 1817, Schubert was commissioned to write an instrumental chamber work incorporating music from Die Forelle. The result was his Trout Quintet of 1819 (Piano Quintet in A Major, D. 667), the fourth movement of which is a set of variations on the Die Forelle tune.This arrangement is also available for 3-part treble (SSA) voices published by Hal Leonard Corporation, 10500871.
