Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1099392). Do you want to build a rocket? was originally composed for a wonderful group of children I worked with at the Young Music Society Winter School in Canberra. The first day that I went in to meet them, I sat down with them on the floor and asked them what kind of performance they wanted to build. It was around the time that the Disney animated feature Frozen was very popular with kids. Or not, as it turns out, because one little boy’s hand shot up straight away and he said: “Tell you what I don’t wanna build: a stupid snowman!†He suggested we build a rocket instead. So that’s what we did. It’s a song about the wonder and curiosity we feel about the universe, of our desire to explore it, and of the determination and grit required to achieve that dream. It’s some very hard yards to build a rocket and to learn to fly it, but our dreams are always worth the work! I hope you have fun with this song. Teachers, I invite you to get as theatrical as you dare with it. In our original performance we had all these toy instruments, toy toolkits, and painted cardboard boxes. (So many boxes!). Let’s just say, if you think it’s gonna be ‘too much’, it’s probably exactly the right amount. Sally Whitwell August 2022.

It's a Christmas folk song, which tells of bringing local Mediterranean produce as gifts for Mary's newborn son: dates, figs, nuts, honey, cheese.The setting has simple harmonies, enhanced by the flute floating above.The solo (v2) could be sung in unison, but if you have a soloist brave enough to try, it's worth the effort.I made this arrangement for a local ladies choir here in France - it sounds fabulous!

In this post-pandemic era, demand for octavos for smaller choirs is on the rise. Originally set for SATB voices, this original setting of the well-known Catherine Winkworth translation of a text by Martin Luther is here re-arranged for two-part mixed voices and is well within the abilities of even the smallest church choirs. In the natural minor mode, it has mild dissonance but is not difficult to intone. Care must be taken to not sharp the leading tone. It would make a wonderful addition to a church's Lenten or Reformation repertoire. This would be a welcome addition to the library with minimal voices. It would also work as a duet.

A Time to Rejoice! is a dramatic and poignant cantata for children and organ (piano version also available) in which performers and audience embark on an exciting journey through time to witness the events of the first Easter. The time machine is somewhat unreliable, adding humour to the story, and stops are made in the Garden of Eden and Bethlehem before arriving in Jerusalem for Palm Sunday and the events of the crucifixion. It is suitable for performance by schools and children's choirs, suggested age range 8-13 years. The optional second parts greatly enhance the cantata and can be sung by a group of children or even an adult choir.Whilst not a staged production, there is plenty of scope for acting in the roles of the Captains, and props such as tea lights for the opening procession, pilots' hats for the Captains and palm branches for the song The King is Coming.A Time to Rejoice! was premiered by St. Joseph's in the Park School, Hertingfordbury, on 17 March 2023. here are some comments from staff/parents:'A Time to Rejoice! was amazing! At least 5 parents thought it was the best production St Joes has ever put on' Deputy Head'An absolutely amazing evening! Such beautiful music so beautifully performed.
