ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSThe Sonatina For Clarinet And Bassoon was written between March and June 2018 and is dedicated to my good bassoonist friend Jane Thompson and her family. It was her husband, Astley Jones, who asked me to write the piece as a way of showing her how much we all loved her! I thought that was the sweetest thing and the rest is history!We hoped to give this piece its world premiere at some point in 2018 or 2019, with Jane herself playing the bassoon and myself on clarinet. However, the first major hurdle was Jane having an operation on each hand to cure her Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and the second big hurdle was Covid-19! Due to lifeâ€™s normal pressures, the work still awaits its long awaited for premiere.It has three movements, fast, slow, fast, and a total duration of approximately 15 minutes.Â The clarinet part is for Bflat clarinet.I have also transcribed the bassoon part for bass clarinet so the piece can be played by either combination. It could even be played by two bass clarinets, which would be hilarious!I feel, as a player myself, that its main challenge is in sheer breathing and playing stamina as it certainly gets you working up a sweat by the end, but its comical, quirky character will hopefully make it great fun for players and audience alike.

Originally commissioned by cellist Marty Steinberg as an encore for a performance with clarinetist Mitch Sturman at a concert in Philadelphia at Congregation Beth 'El given on November 4, 2018, the piece has been re-scored for clarinet and bassoon. The three tunes are Long live the nigun, Bublitschki, and Hopke In Long live the nigun (nigun meaning tune), the melody is evenly split between clarinet and bassoon. The popular Bublitschki (bagels) is presented in a quasi canonic form, each restatement being slightly varied. Hopke (literally hop) is a fast dance culturally derived from the hopak. The bassoon carries the entire melody with clarinet accompaniment.

Entry of the Gladiators is probably the best known work by Czech composer Julius Fucik (1872-1916) â€“ primarily because of its adoption as an upbeat â€˜screamerâ€™ march, heralding the arrival of circus clowns. In fact, Fucikâ€™s original title for the work was Grande Marche Chromatique, because the piece makes frequent use of chromatic passages. He later substituted Entry of the Gladiators because of a personal interest in Roman history. Fucik intended the work to be played at a standard march tempo, though it is generally performed significantly faster in the â€˜clownsâ€™ context!This arrangement for duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon has been classed as 'advanced intermediate' as, although it can be attempted by players of ABRSM Grade 4 - 5 standard, it takes more experienced musicians to do it full justice.
