This easy arrangement for clarinet and bassoon duet has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.

In his lifetime, Austrian composer Johann Strauss II (1825 – 1899) was dubbed ‘The Waltz King’, reflecting his prolific output of this type of dance music. He also composed polkas, quadrilles, marches, operettas and a ballet. During the 1848 upheavals in the Austrian Empire, Johann II opted to side with the revolutionaries. This allegiance had an adverse effect on his career, as well as deepening the rift between him and his father, so in due course Johann wrote several marches with titles that might encourage the establishment to forget his past pro-revolutionary sympathies. The Ottinger Reiter-Marsch was first published in 1850. Strauss claimed that the work had been commissioned for a regiment who specifically requested the dedication to General Franz von Ottinger. At the time, Ottinger was not very popular, largely because of his punitive attitude towards former revolutionaries.This arrangement for mixed woodwind duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon is suitable for players of ABRSM Grade 4 - 5 standard and above.

ALL PURCHASES COME WITH SCORE AND PARTSThe Sonatina For Clarinet And Bassoon was written between March and June 2018 and is dedicated to my good bassoonist friend Jane Thompson and her family. It was her husband, Astley Jones, who asked me to write the piece as a way of showing her how much we all loved her! I thought that was the sweetest thing and the rest is history!We hoped to give this piece its world premiere at some point in 2018 or 2019, with Jane herself playing the bassoon and myself on clarinet. However, the first major hurdle was Jane having an operation on each hand to cure her Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and the second big hurdle was Covid-19! Due to life’s normal pressures, the work still awaits its long awaited for premiere.It has three movements, fast, slow, fast, and a total duration of approximately 15 minutes. The clarinet part is for Bflat clarinet.I have also transcribed the bassoon part for bass clarinet so the piece can be played by either combination. It could even be played by two bass clarinets, which would be hilarious!I feel, as a player myself, that its main challenge is in sheer breathing and playing stamina as it certainly gets you working up a sweat by the end, but its comical, quirky character will hopefully make it great fun for players and audience alike.

Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Op. 125 incorporates part of the poem An die Freude (To Joy), a hymn written by Friedrich Schiller, with the text sung by soloists and a choir in its last movement. It was the first example of a major composer using the human voice as prominently as the instruments in a symphony, thus creating a far-reaching work that set the tone for the symphonic form that was to be adopted by Romantic composers. This is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. The choral symphony, better known as the Ninth Symphony or The Ninth, is one of the best known works in the Western repertoire, considered both an icon and predecessor of Romantic music, and one of Beethoven's great masterpieces, where it was first performed on May 7, 1824, the same year it was completed, at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna, Austria. The conductor was Michael Umlauf, the theater's music director, and Beethoven - dissuaded from conducting by the advanced stage of his deafness - was given a special place on the stage next to the conductor. Bach reserved it for a few of his most impressive works, such as the Kyrie in the Mass in B minor. Bach composed his ‘French’ suites as a young man of thirty, when he was working at the court of Köthen. However, the suites have nothing to do with the court. Bach wrote them for teaching purposes in his own private circle. The first five appear in their original form in the little music book he compiled in 1722 for his second wife Anna Magdalena, possibly as a wedding present. But Bach continued to rework the pieces. The later versions, with the addition of a sixth suite, have survived thanks to the many copies made by his pupils. They are rewarding practice pieces that despite a certain compositional complexity (it is Bach, after all), do not make extreme demands on the player.

Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was an influential German music critic and composer who was troubled by mental health issues for much of his life. Schumann’s enthusiasm for music was evident at an early age but he was discouraged from pursuing this as a career and encouraged towards the law instead. Ultimately, music won out and Schumann began studying piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara was later to become Schumann’s wife. After damage to one hand affected his playing ability, Schumann turned his attention to musicology and composition. Träumerei (Dreaming) has been described as one of the most famous piano works ever written. It is one of a collection of short pieces, entitled Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood) written in 1838. This arrangement for mixed woodwind duo of clarinet and bassoon would make a charming feature piece at a wedding, anniversary or recital.

Slavonic Dances Op 46, written in 1878, was something of a breakthrough work for Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, finally establishing his reputation well beyond his native land. The dances are original melodies, inspired by, and drawing on, the character of traditional national dances, rather than works based on existing folk tunes, as was the fashion among composers at around that time. These Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano 4 hands but, at his publisher’s request, Dvorak produced orchestrated versions shortly thereafter. The pieces proved so popular that Dvorak composed a second set, Op. 72, in 1886. Op. 46, No. 3 is in the form of the polka, a dance which originated in Bohemia. This arrangement, for mixed woodwind duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon, is best suited to players of advanced intermediate standard or above.

Entry of the Gladiators is probably the best known work by Czech composer Julius Fucik (1872-1916) – primarily because of its adoption as an upbeat ‘screamer’ march, heralding the arrival of circus clowns. In fact, Fucik’s original title for the work was Grande Marche Chromatique, because the piece makes frequent use of chromatic passages. He later substituted Entry of the Gladiators because of a personal interest in Roman history. Fucik intended the work to be played at a standard march tempo, though it is generally performed significantly faster in the ‘clowns’ context!This arrangement for duo of B-flat clarinet and bassoon has been classed as 'advanced intermediate' as, although it can be attempted by players of ABRSM Grade 4 - 5 standard, it takes more experienced musicians to do it full justice.

His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra.
