The Moldau, Czech Vltava, is a symphonic poem by Bohemian composer Bedřich Smetana that evokes the flow of the Vltava River—or, in German, the Moldau—from its source in the mountains of the Bohemian Forest, through the Czechcountryside, to the city of Prague. A devoutly patriotic work, The Moldau captures in music Smetana’s love of his homeland. Completed in 1874 and first performed the following year, the piece constitutes the second movement of a six-movement suite, Má vlast (My Country), which premiered in its entirety in Prague on November 5, 1882. This easy arrangement for 2 flutes with piano accompaniment is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital. It can also be played as a simple duet, with no piano.

This sonata for two flutes and piano by Franz Doppler was rediscovered by Prof. András Adorján in the former production archive of the Schott music publishing house and is now published completely for the first time. An undated handwritten note on the title page of the manuscript solves the riddle: NB. Von dieser Sonate nur Andante u. Rondo stechen zu lassen und das Stück demgemäß zu titulieren“. [NB. Engrave only Andante a. Rondo of this Sonata and name the piece accordingly.] This is why only the last two movements were printed by Schott and this composition survived as a fragment. Andante and Rondo are very popular among flautists. Now they can enjoy the whole sonata including the first two movements Moderato and Menuetto. The musicians played or sang in front of her. Some permitted her to write off their own hand-written dance booklets in full. In 1956, Hanny Christen began to record this music with a tape recorder. It is thanks to her that over 12,000 instrumental dance movements of Switzerland and many other pieces of tradition (costumes, biographies, musical instruments etc.) were saved from being forgotten.The instruments used in traditional folk music vary depending on the type of dance and region. Flutes are more or less non-existent. The author would like to fill a gap with this publication. She has therefore adapted one folk dance per canton from the Hanny Christen-collection* for two flutes. The pieces from the cantons of Basel City, Thurgau and Geneva do not come from this source, though.The melodies from the other 23 cantons are taken unchanged from the collection. The second voice was not always composed quite traditional. The melody follows - if possible - a contrapuntal melody of its own and is directed to the flute (difficulty grade 3 +).The editor, Helene Schulthess, is a flutist with a wide repertoire. She lives in Switzerland. She performs as a soloist, makes chamber music and is active as a music teacher.
