It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as “The Isle of Skyeâ€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland.  The boat in the song (“Speed bonny boatâ€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 “carried the lad who was born to be king†to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as “Bonnie Prince Charlie.†The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers. The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy SATB arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections or solos, though can obviously create solos if you want. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano: D4 – D5; Alto: A3 (only once) – B4; Tenor: D3–D4; Bass: G2-B3.

The song was performed by The Dropkick Murphys in the key of C. The arrnger chose G to allow 4 part harmony. Performance Suggestions: With a capable choir this could/should be performed a capella with interludes by a button accordion. A melodica, or flute/pennywhistle could be substituted for the accordion, or a piano/synth. On the recording there are also guitars and bodhráns - an Irish hand-drum. Guitar chords are included in the arrangement. A suggestion is to watch the original Dropkick Murphy's video on Youtube to catch the spirit of the song.

Published by Suze Pratten (A0.1365619). This is an SATB setting of an excerpt from a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem called Inversnaid. I found the words fashioned in concrete on the wall of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and was very taken by them. Apparently, Hopkins went on a daytrip to the small township of Inversnaid on the eastern bank of Loch Lomond in 1881 and he wrote the poem while there.The song is written in two sections which can be layered and arranged as desired. I have suggested an arrangement on the score but feel free to change this - my only caution is to make sure you include some 'light' and 'shade' in the arrangement...it is not meant to be sung with all parts blazing for the whole length of the song!! When Irish Eyes Are Smiling is a timeless standard that was first published in 1912 when such tributes to a romanticised Ireland were popular in the UK and the USA. During World War One, Ithe song was recorded by John McCormack (tenor). It was destined to became a familiar standard for generations. More than 200 recordings have since been made, featuring such artists as Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, and Roger Whittaker.This arrangement includes the original opening verse, plus a suprising chorus set in a two-beat meter instead of a waltz. The traditional waltz style appears later, including the option of audience participation. The harmonies are not difficult to sing, but the arrangement can be simplified easily by selecting sections in unison with the piano accompaniment carrying the chords.Kathleen McGuire's arrangement was originally created for the Various Voices Choral Festival in Dublin, Ireland. It is sure to bring a tear of joy or nostalgia to the eye of anyone from the Emerald Isle.

Highland Cathedral is a popular tune for the Great Highland Bagpipe, composed by German musicians Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb in 1982 for a Highland Games held in Germany. It has been proposed as a Scottish national anthem to replace the unofficial anthems Scotland the Brave and/or Flower of Scotland. In this arrangement for four voices (SATB) you will hear the spirit of the Scottish Highlands and feel the sea breeze on your face. The arrangement is fun and easy, and was actually written with smaller and perhaps poorly balanced choirs in mind: there are never more than three parts to the harmony, so one of the four sections is always doubling one of the others, in a rotating fashion! The notes and rhythms are very straightforward, and although the Gaelic words are a bit tongue-twisting, a mere five bars' worth -- five short text fragments -- serve for the whole song, and a phonetic approximation of the pronunciation is provided. The piece is only about a minute long, so it makes a good encore, or a fast and flashy finale for a folksong set!

Many songs were created and subsequently preserved in pubs and other informal gatherings. Will You Go, Lassie, Go, also known as Wild Mountain Thyme, is basically a love song. The imagery comes alive, however, if one has had the pleasure of seeing in person the blooming heather (another alternate title) mentioned in the lyrics. When in bloom, it blankets hillsdises with it's distinctive purple hue. Heather was also used extensively in the process of thatching, roofs, a process that continues to this day. Though more difficult to work with than some other plants, there is a movement to preserve heather thatching. This arrangement is for SATB choir with piano accompaniment and features a female soloist at the beginning and the end. Your choir will love singing this accessible arrangement.
