Stewart (A0.1211960). “What If I Seek for Love†(1601), by English composer Robert Jones (c.1577-1617), who was one of the most prolific composers and lutenists of his day.  Of the more popular musical forms of English Renaissance (the late 15th century to the early 1600’s) was the lute song: a piece for single voice accompanied by the lute.  Most lute songs are about love and tended to be a rather melancholy affair with disdainful ladies refusing to acknowledge the ardent advances of hopeful lovers – as is “What If I Seek for Loveâ€.  This 2023 setting is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble and keyboard accompaniment.  It can be performed either a cappella or with accompaniment, the SATB voicings will stand alone  The simple melody and poetry of Jones is retained and embellished with the piano accompaniment.  This is an excellent piece for young singers, introducing them to style, form and technique.  Performance time: 1:30+-.

Originally written in C#-minor this version transposed to C-minor to make it easier for you to follow (for example on the piano). You can accompany it with the piano using the chords given above or let your choir sing A-capella. The special part about this arrangement is the constant change of melody between the different voices. The iconic flute solo is not included in this arrangement but can be simply added between the second chorus and the Dal Segno. Die Lotosblume (which means The Lotus-Flowerâ€) is No. 7 of Robert Schumann’s song cycle Myrthen, which was a wedding present to his wife Clara Wieck. Schumann completed the cycle in 1840, totaling 26 Lieder (songs for solo voice and piano), with texts by prominent 19th-century German poets such as Ludwig Rellstab, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. “Die Lotosblume†is a poem by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) the text of which, given the circumstances of Robert’s & Clara’s romance, is thought to have a double meaning: the lotus-flower represents Clara, the moon Robert, and the sun Clara’s father, who disapproved of their relationship. This arrangement preserves Schumann’s original piano part in support of a 4-part (SATB) harmonization of the melody. Although the lower voices are informed by the harmonies of the accompaniment and move largely in parallel motion, each voice retains its own counter-melodic value. The arrangement was premiered in 2014 by the Morris County (NJ) Honor Choir under the direction of the arranger, D. Jason Bishop.

Due to the varied onomatopoeic imitation of 'klipp-klapp' by using belly drum, the clapping of hands, 'dabada' and 'klippi-klippi-klapp' interjections of the choir, as well as the stage direction of walking on tiptoe aimed at both performers and listeners, this piece really has the potential of joining in and tapping along.

In the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his son… I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paul’s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting. The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:31-23). Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in ¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.

The æolian modal polyphony and Medieval Latin text suggest a much earlier date of composition originating from central Europe; the plainsong melody of the verses is derived from liturgical sources of the same period and was not included in the original document.This new arrangement of Gaudete is based closely on the original music and text. However, the original key of G minor has been transposed to D minor to create more variety in the voicing, yet remaining faithful to the original vocal parts.The piano accompaniment in the refrain is simply an amalgamation of the voices and therefore, in order to create a pure a cappella sound in performance, the piano part may be omitted and used solely for rehearsal purposes. As the verses were originally sung unaccompanied, the piano part in this arrangement has been devised to compliment the plainsong melody, but of course may be omitted in performance if preferred.Originally, each verse would probably have been sung by a solo tenor voice. However, in this arrangement, each of the four verses has been allocated to a different soloist. He studied composition at the Royal College of Music in London under Hubert Parry and Frederick Bridge. Ager also became Professor of Organ & Harmony at the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music (the predecessor of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) for nearly four decades. Although not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, Ager's music, including a variety of songs, choral, piano, and organ works, is worth exploring for those interested in late 19th and early 20th-century music.
