She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.Poet Kim Stafford grew up in Oregon, Iowa, Indiana, California, and Alaska, following his parents as they taught and traveled through the West. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, and the founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College, where he has taught since 1979. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. The Pennsylvania Dutch were Germans who migrated to America during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They brought with them their culture, religions, music, and cooking! The Pennsylvania Dutch language is still spoken by the Amish, the religious sect mostly known for their horses and buggies and their eighteenth century way of life. There are many different tunes associated with Reide, Reide, Geili! The song has taken on a life of its own reflecting the lives of the Amish who still sing it, and the melody and text can differ from community to community. The particular tune used for this arrangement comes from Holmes County, Ohio and is similar to the English nursery rhyme, Ring Around the Rosie. Amish parents and grandparents will sing this rhyme while bouncing their toddlers on their knee. The bouncing is to imitate a horseback ride as the song begins. At the end of each verse, the adult suddenly drops their leg to imitate the child falling off the horse. The child falls to the floor amidst a peal of laughter. The song can be sung in either Pennsylvania Dutch or in English (written underneath the Dutch). This unique arrangement will lift your audience’s spirits as they are reminded of the songs of their youth, and your singers will enjoy its high energy and pulsating rhythms! A thorough pronunciation guide is also included.

Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. English.The Seasons was commissioned by the South Bend Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk, conductor, and first performed on March 3, 2013 by the South Bend Chamber Singers with the Euclid Quartet in a concert devoted to music about the weather. The texts for this work were selected by the composer, and they represent three different time periods, the 17th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to show that writers have long been fascinated by the seasons and by the distinct weather conditions that each season brings. Although certain types of weather, such as wind or rain, may occur in any of the seasons, the descriptions of weather in these four poems present specific weather conditions which commonly occur in each of the four seasons: a still, hot, sultry day interrupted by the movement of a light breeze from the hills (summer); the cooling morning mists and light frost which signal the coming of winter (autumn); the bitter iciness of fierce winds and frozen air-in this poem, further compared with man's ingratitude (winter); the warm rains and southerly winds that melt the ice and bring about new life (spring). Throughout this piece various musical devices are employed to underscore or even interpret the words. These devices include text painting, contrapuntal structures (double canon and fugue), and dramatically shifting harmonic colors as each season unfolds. About the composer Orlando Lasso, Orlande de Lassus, Orlando di Lasso or Orlandus Lassus was born in Bergen (Dutch) or Mons (French) in Henegouwen, Belgium – which was a place in the Habsburg Netherlands at the time – in 1532, and was highly regarded as the best composer of his time. Temopraries appointed him titles like ‘ruler of music’ and ‘master of motets’. The roman-catholic composer was also one of the most productive composers of all times. Among his works are 53 masses for four to eight voices, and 1250 works for two to twelve voices in the form of motets, requiems, madrigals, chansons and songs for choir. Later in life, he wrote German drinking songs, as well as Dutch songs. From the latter category, none have been preserved. One of his drinking songs ‘Un jour vis un foulon qui fouloit’ was translated to English by William Shakespeare, after which it was used in his theatre play ‘Henry IV part 2’. About this work Prophetiae Sibyllarum is a motet in Latin for four voices. Posthumously published in 1600, it sets 12 prophecies attributed to the Sibyls (priestesses of Apollo later adopted by Christians) with a prologue.The movements are catalogued in order under separate opus numbers LV 1048 to 1060. About this edition This edition was notated from the composer’s manuscript (published around 1600), Das Chorwerk (Wolfenbüttel, 1937) and an anonymous reading score. The note values were halved for easier sightreading by modern singers. Recordings by De Labyrintho were studied for interpretation. On the base of these recordings, small checkmarks are added at places where collective breathing moments are suggested. These are not part of the manuscript.Great care has been put in the correct notation of the original work, as well as in solving apparent inconsistencies in the source materials. However, this edition was made purely to acommodate singers to study the melodic lines and should not be used for historic purposes.

It was the second song of the (SEVEN ANTHEMS TO CHRIST) cycle that I had composed, but the first using his Greek translation(s). It eventually would become the last piece to grace the cycle of seven in order of my musical presentation sequence. In fact, this known 1st century Hymn to Christ spans 18 verses of the first chapter of the Gospel of John. My setting of the anthem is seven plus minutes long in performance length. The song's length was not on purpose, but the number seven does have Biblical significance (seven days of creation, seven golden lamp stands, etc.) The number seven is also known among Biblical scholars as the number of Holiness and Perfect Creation. Since this rather long, yet theologically complete Hymn to Christ already existed in the 1st century, it is no wonder the Apostle John opted to begin his Gospel with it, probably quoting the entire text. Consequently, he converted this particular Hymn to Christ’s lyrics into what would later become canonized Scripture. The anthem is composed for SSATB with solo SSA trio, and Solo Soprano and Solo Baritone lines, accompanied by Flute and B♠Clarinet. The key signature of the anthem is B♠Major. However, a lot of time is spent weaving and bobbing around the Dominant chord, (F Major). The Flute and Clarinet introduction play seven different motifs, interweaving with counterpoint, musically connoting the dual natures of Christ--fully God, and fully man. An SSA trio opens the piece recounting the creation story. A bass solo shortly follows, introducing John the baptizer's story and purpose. Soon, the anthem breaks out into full SSATB illustrating Christ's life and purpose for our salvation. The final coda is the great Doxology, sung in 5 parts, accompanied by the Flute and Clarinet, and the entire congregation (or audience) is invited to sing along with the familiar tune.
