First performance March, 2023 by Schola Cantorum of Silicon Valley.One morning in early 2022, after having somewhat unexpectedly lost my two aunts and one of my best friends in the world over the previous year or so, I woke up and this piece, along with some tears, poured out in about 15 minutes. For Us the Living contains echoes of Brahms' German Requiem (Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras), Shawn Kirchner's Cornerstone, and Dolly Parton's Light of a Clear Blue Morning (another a song about loss). The words are partly based on a short poem I wrote after my father passed away. I ended to him, Go to sleep, rest a while. So, perhaps obviously, the piece is like a lullaby. What I'm saying is that the purpose of mourning is first to comfort the survivors, and a call to take care of each other -- but also to not just wait for salvation, but to use the memory of our loved ones, to be inspired to pick ourselves up and make ourselves useful while we're on this Earth.Â

Stewart (A0.1033880). “O Death, rock me asleepâ€: The lament of Anne Boleyn, 2nd wife of King Henry the VIIIth, is essentially a Tudor-era poem inspired (perhaps attributed) by/to her last days in the Tower of London while awaiting execution. She was convicted on charges of high treason, adultery and incest, and sentenced to be beheaded. The authorship of this dirge is entirely speculative; yet William Shakespeare quotes it, and Henry Purcell uses the same funeral ostinato a 100 years later. A nod to Voices of Music (Early Music Ensemble) and their gutsy scholarship regarding the B-flat/B-natural controversy. This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with keyboard accompaniment. Performance time: 5:53+.

This is an SATB+piano arrangement of one of Bob Dylan's perhaps lesser known folk tunes, but one of his most plaintive and heartfelt songs. With Dylan's exquisite sense of analogy, he paints a heartfelt portrait of Americana. The difficulty level would be intermediate. This is an excellent example of homophonic choral writing in an authentic American style, emphasizing characteristics of American folk songs, connection to nature and humanity. This would be an excellent show stopper, end of concert, or other appropriate place in a program. For students, this builds choral tone, has solo, unison, two, three, and full choral singing, and a small solo. The theme builds community, and respect and love for nature and humanity. Perhaps the most often-sung processional hymn on Palm Sunday, “Ride On, Ride On in Majesty†was written in 1820 by Anglican cleric, poet, and scholar Henry Hart Milman (1791-1868) and first  published in Reginald Heber’s Hymns Written and Adapted to the Weekly Church Service of the Year (1827). The hymn references Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem prior to his Passion, as recorded in Matthew 21:1-11.Writing for the Hymnology Archive of The Hymn Society in the US and Canada, editor Chris Fenner notes in his analysis of the text that:“This hymn ... is much less a narrative or paraphrase of the triumphal entry (Matt. 21, Mk. 11, Lk. 19, Jn. 12) than it is a forward-looking hymn pointing from the palms to the cross to [Jesus’] ascended position on the throne. The triumphal entry itself is a fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 (‘Behold, your king is coming to you . . . humble and mounted on a donkey’). The recurring opening line is possibly an allusion to Psalm 45:4 (‘in thy majesty ride prosperously’). “Some hymnological commentators connect this hymn with the idea of the great reversal in Philippians 2:5-12, where we find the Christ who humbled himself in a crucified death, later to be exalted, name above all names, to which every knee will bow. As Canadian hymn scholar Stanley Osborne observed, this hymn’s poetic strength is in its exploration of that duality:'Objective, robust, confident, and stirring, it possesses that peculiar combination of tragedy and victory which draws the singer into the very centre of the drama. Arise, Shine, for thy Light has Come is a setting of a well-known text from Isaiah 60, popularly read and sung during the Christmas season, perhaps most famously in part one of Handel's Messiah. Ranging from ponderous to rousing and triumphant and back again, this piece strives to demonstrate the stark contrast between light and darkness. Great for holiday choral programs and service music for more advanced church choirs, this work was written for, and first performed by the Lompoc High School A Cappella Choir in 2003.Voicing: SATB, a cappellaPaul Osborne is a choral director, tenor soloist, and composer/arranger from California's Central Coast.  He received his degree at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where he studied choral conducting with René Clausen.  He serves as Chorus Master for Opera San Luis Obispo and Central Coast Gilbert and Sullivan, is the founder and director of Resonance Vocal Ensemble, and is the former choral director at San Luis Obispo High School. This setting is somewhat minimalist, modeled on Arvo Pärt's tintinnabulum style. The piece works as a processional for Lenten and Holy Week concerts or devotional choral services for Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, feasts of the Holy Cross, and other occasions. Piano is used in this version, but it could be sung entirely a cappella. .
