Written for SSAATTBB Choir.I have long been fascinated with setting old Latin texts to music; particularly ones outside of the traditional sacred poetry found in the various requiems that have been composed throughout the centuries. Rather, I was particularly drawn to a poem written by the Roman poet Catullus. Simple in nature, the poem is only 3 phrases yet delivers a strong message of the turmoil found in the human psyche. “Odi et Amo†translates to “I hate and I loveâ€. The poem embellishes the poets struggle to balance the extremes of the human emotion and how torturous it can be to navigate 2 of our strongest emotions. The call of the opening “Odi et Amo†is repeated numerous times throughout the piece to drive home the 2 emotions of Hate and Love. The work commands exceptional precision of intonation between the 8 parts. While slow in nature though its tempo, the piece has numerous harmonic classes of 2nds to create not only tension, but a longing passion desperate for resolution. -Aaron Gage.

This wordless, instrumentally-inspired piece was composed in May 1979 by Gene Puerling and recorded by The Singers Unlimited on their album “A Cappella III†(and contained in the “Magic Voices†box set). This is NOT a transcription, but an authentic edition created from the handwritten manuscript of Gene Puerling. The influence of Chick Corea is found in the simple repetitive harmonies and driving rhythms. Two vocalists are featured melodically throughout the piece (with melodic line inspired by Chuck Mangione, thus the mash-up name in the title!), with up to six parts in the ensemble vocal parts. More accessible than many other Puerling charts, this piece gives lots of opportunity to work on ensemble tuning and rhythmic vitality! Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.924875). Composed in 1906, the secular art song Nebbie (Mists) by Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936) is a setting of poem by Ada Negri (1870–1945). I have been drawn to this song ever since studying voice at The Boston Conservatory. The words focus on loneliness and the darker aspects of nature, and the music is appropriately fatalistic-sounding in response. The deceptively simple-sounding scaler motion of chords in the piano combined with the melodic line that mirrors that motion but adds dramatic intervallic leaps, results in a very dramatic song. The addition of choral lines here enhances the drama inherent in the harmonies. This is a great choice for choir directors seeking a different kind of challenge for their groups. It can even be used in Halloween programs. Italian and English.

Each verse features a variation on the same simple melody, while the varied harmony and counterpoint reflect the power and beauty of the text. Only about two minutes in length, I See His Blood Upon the Rose, is appropriate for concert or liturgical use, especially during the Lenten season. It requires some practice, but will be very rewarding for moderate to advanced choirs. An SSAB bossa nova arrangement for an advanced high school vocal jazz ensemble. Opens with a rubato a capella section, before settling into a relaxed groove with some textural variety in the vocals. The piano part is rhythmically straightforward, and the vocals range between simpler sections and flashier moments (with brief baritone splits) to impress the audience and challenge the students. The range is less ambitious than some high school arrangements, keeping the sopranos to E4 and lower, and allowing basses to split down if asked to go above a D4. Please enjoy it as a change of pace from the usual high school repertoire! And yes, that is my last name.

Therefore, after the songs 'Irische Harfe', he wrote another cycle for mixed choir at a ripe old age: 'Lieder einer Insel'. In three parts with ten choral settings altogether, the composer tells stories from the mythology of the Emerald Isle in the Irish poems, in the texts of old and modern lyricists, describes emotions, desires, laments: from 'Weissagung Cathbads' to 'Lobgesang der Gerechten', from the bright 'Mönch und seinem Lieblingskater' to the sad lament 'Das Lied in einem Mädchenherzen', from the tender 'Anrufung des Friedens' to the contemplate 'Abendgebet'. The freely tonal settings range from simple, chordal-homophonic via declamatory to expressive.
