Rachel dies in bitterness. Jeremiah prophecies the grief of the mothers of Jerusalem will experience at the sack of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar and personifies it as Rachel weeping. A third use of the metaphor is the mothers whose babies are destroyed at Herod the Great’s command. ♫ Coventry Carol is 1 of 3 songs belonging to Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, a Coventry Mystery play of the nativity. The only surviving copy of the play (and the song) is dated 1534. It is singable as a congregation hymn, as an anthem for unison voices, or as a vocal solo (range A below middle C to D a ninth above middle C). The text is by Canadian poet Frederick George Scott (1861-1944). The original title is Requiescant (Let them rest). The source is Christian Poetry in Canada (ed David A. Kent ed, Anglican Book Center and ECW Press, Toronto, Canada, 1993) page 54. Scott was a military chaplain during World War I. This poem was, in the poet’s own words, [b]egun while I was lying awake in a sleeping-bag under a tarpaulin at Brielen, near Ypres…. during the gas attack on April 22nd, 1915…. As I lay awake, I wondered what all our comrades who had passed over were doing now…. I finished the poem at a little village called Robec. As I wrote it, I could see through the window, my host, who was a carpenter, making a baby’s coffin. This choral work is sure to add excitement to your concert and it was given splendid reviews when it was first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was later performed at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls just outside London where it received a rapturous reception from the large audience. The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple units of two and three beats.The choral score contains a piano reduction of the orchestral score. The full orchestral score and parts are available separately from SMP. The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available.The words are by the distinguished and much-loved Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He made significant contributions to literature and wrote a prodigious number of works including essays, philosophical treatises, journals, memoirs, short stories and letters. The text of this work is taken from two poems in the book entitled Gitanjali. The title is translated as Song Offerings and was largely responsible for Tagore winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The book contains over one hundred poems, translated freely by the author into English from the original Bengali, published in 1910. The English version appeared in 1912 published by the Indian Society of London. The text has been adapted slightly for this choral setting.Colin Kirkpatrick has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast world-wide.

The purpose of these roads was to enable heralds to relay messages quickly and reliably. Isaiah uses this metaphor to describe a time of preparation for the coming Messiah. Preparing people’s hearts and minds for Messiah would be like the leveling of land to build roads for royal communication. Malachi ends with the promise of a prophetic forerunner of Messiah. Inspiration Each of us, throughout our lives, are faced with choices where the path forward is unclear. Where the decision maybe a crossroad for our lives. Who can guide us? Who should we turn to? Jesus said I Am The Way? The Music A rousing church anthem that begins with the Tenor Soloist searching for answers. Presented with a difficult choice he asks Jesus what should I do now?, who will be my guide?. The choir responds with I Am The Way, offering the response in a polyphonic round, so to speak. Once completed, the opening melody returns sung by the choir followed by a repeat of the chorus. A C section is then introduced, in a minor key, reminding us to follow the Light as Darkness can deceive. The Tenor soloist returns with the opening melody, now with minimal accompaniment, giving a retrospective feeling to the music. The anthem closes with a repeat of the chorus followed by the Tenor soloist giving the piece a finality.

Die Lotosblume (which means The Lotus-Flowerâ€) is No. 7 of Robert Schumann’s song cycle Myrthen, which was a wedding present to his wife Clara Wieck. Schumann completed the cycle in 1840, totaling 26 Lieder (songs for solo voice and piano), with texts by prominent 19th-century German poets such as Ludwig Rellstab, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. “Die Lotosblume†is a poem by Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) the text of which, given the circumstances of Robert’s & Clara’s romance, is thought to have a double meaning: the lotus-flower represents Clara, the moon Robert, and the sun Clara’s father, who disapproved of their relationship. This arrangement preserves Schumann’s original piano part in support of a 4-part (SATB) harmonization of the melody. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1439047). “Let All the World in Ev’ry Corner Sing” is a short poem from the collection, The Temple, by Anglican priest, poet, and orator George Herbert (1593-1633). A contemporary of William Shakespeare and John Milton, God-child to poet John Donne, Herbert is associated with the 17th-century Metaphysical poets and “is remembered as a pivotal figure: enormously popular, deeply and broadly influential, and arguably the most skillful and important British devotional lyricist of his or any other time.” Shortly before his death in 1633 at age 39, Herbert directed that a manuscript of his religious poems be sent to his fellow clergyman and friend, Nicholas Ferrar, reportedly saying, “Tell him ... if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor Soul, let it be made publick: if not, let him burn it: for I and it, are less than the least of God’s mercies.” First published in 1633, The Temple was an enormously popular work, totaling more than 20,000 copies printed in 13 editions between 1633 and 1679.“Let All the World in Ev'ry Corner Sing” is the refrain of Herbert’s poem, “Antiphon (I),” which appeared in the “Christian Life” section of The Temple. An antiphon may be defined as a short sentence or refrain sung or recited before or after a psalm or canticle; and in Herbert's short poem of two stanzas, he may also have intended that the verses be recited antiphonally (alternately) by two groups.
