PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. History of the United States Coast Guard and the Coast Guard HymnIn 1915 the United States Congress formed the United States Coast Guard (USCG) when it combined the Revenue Cutter Service with the Life-Saving Service. The Coast Guard became the sole maritime arm of the United States Armed Forces with the purpose of saving people in danger at sea and enforcing America’s maritime laws. In 1939, the Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the Lighthouse Service and maintenance of aids to maritime navigation. In 1946 the Coast Guard assumed oversight of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation, including merchant marine licensing and merchant vessel safety. And in 1967, the Coast Guard assumed the administration of bridges over navigable waterways. The Coast Guard serves under the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime, but under the Department of the Navy in war. Missions include protecting the environment, and securing the nation by enforcing Federal laws on the high seas, on the nation's coastal waters, and in the nation’s inland waterways. At one time, under its former name, the Coast Guard was the only Unted States Armed Force at sea. On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act, providing funds to finance the construction of ten ships to enforce Federal tariff and trade laws. Throughout much of its history, the Coast Guard used verse one of the Navy Hymn in its chapel services, because it did not have its own hymn. So, on June 18, 2024, hymn writer James F. Linzey, who dubbed the Coast Guard as the “Ruler of Land and Sea,” since it patrolled the shores and the seas, felt inspired to write the United States Coast Guard hymn. He felt that a score that matched the majesty of the Navy Hymn would be appropriate. Therefore, he chose “Diademata” by Elvey. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

This piece is a choral adaptation of an art song setting for soprano and piano of an original text in German contemplating the nature of the ever powerful ocean. The gentleman who wrote the original poetry did so in response to observing the waves breaking upon a rocky shoreline. There is an English text under the German that is a literal and exact translation of the original language and is so well worked out that the same exact music serves the text in both languages with syllabic stress and placement of words in the sentence. Thus it may be sung in either German or English with equal effect. This choral version is an enrichment of the vocal texture but with harmonic language derived from the original piano accompaniment. The piano accompaniment is identical to that of the art song and is somewhat challenging. The choral parts are not terribly difficult, but the difficulty is enhanced somewhat when sung in German. The constant ebb and flow of the sea as well as its power and majesty and mystery are evoked in this richly harmonic and strikingly melodic music.

The long rising and falling phrases and the relentless, rolling arpeggios of the piano part are meant to evoke the rise and fall of the ocean waves that surround Brittany on three sides along its hundreds of miles of breathtakingly beautiful coastline.This piece was composed for the Counterpoints choir of North Vigo High School, Terre Haute, Indiana, under the direction of Michelle Azar. It was first performed on October 24, 2017 under the direction of the composer.

The text for this piece comes from one of my favorite American poets, Kenneth Patchen, who has been the inspiration for several of my compositions. The sense imagery that is illiciated from his words resonate with me. The sounds of musical waves become the bases for the piece. The women’s voices are used as the vehicles of the text while the men’s voices service as a lilting musical ebb and flow. The idea that life and love float along like petals on the ocean, blowing ashore with no ability to change anything - just along for the ride, is a powerful thought. The poet also suggests that even with a long life, our understanding of pleasure is like that of snow, fleeting and temporary. And life keeps blowing rose petals from the ocean to the land in a seemingly random but perhaps divine pattern. This piece utilizes flute and ocean drum to create the atmosphere of the coastline and waves.
