The generally-accepted idea was, Come Hungry, Come Thirsty and feed at the fountain of life that never ran dry.Appropriate for volunteer church choirs, especially Sr. Adults who love remembering the old hymns. Stewart (A0.1505628). “Farewell to Tarwathie” is probably best known from Judy Collins’ recording of 1970 that was accompanied by the songs of Humpback whales; but it started first with a poem written by the Scottish poet-peasant George Scroggie, published in 1857. His poem was accompanied by the traditional 18th century Scottish air “Kennet’s Dream”. Thus, the marriage of Scroggie’s words to a well-known Scottish fiddle tune gives us the “Farewell to Tarwathie” as we know it today. It is a song about a young sailor saying good-bye to family and friends as he heads out to sea to find riches in hunting the whale. This arrangement is scored for a traditional choral mixed ensemble with divisi [SMATTBB] (at times) and a bass-baritone solo, to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 5:30+-.

Audio sample sung (multitrack and transposed down a little) by the composer The original tune was composed with the words Eibhlin a Ruin (Ellen Aroon or Eileen Aroon) by the Irish bard Carroll O'Daly (14th Century), although it was later attributed to the 18th century Irish composer Charles Coffey (this was presumably an arrangement of the original). The words of Robin Adair itself are understood to be by Lady Caroline Keppel, who was in love with a surgeon by that name. (This seems more likely than the theory that Robert Burns wrote it, although Burns certainly knew Keppel's lyrics and made his own parodies upon the words). Some later versions of the melody contain Scotch snaps but this version follows the simplest melodic line, without the Scotch snaps - which may have been closer to O'Daly's original tune - and with quite romantic choral harmonies.

Although I like the well known tune made popular by the Clancy Brothers and the Gypsy Kings (among others), I feel it only really works as a solo unaccompanied song with a relaxed pulse. My melody line is more suited to accompanied singing where the piano provides a strong rhythmic support for the melody line. Some very simple harmonies are included, but the piece could easily be sung by a single voice (male or female) or as a duet. Please note that a simplified (SAB) version is also available to purchase from Sheet Music Plus.

He immediately offers her rich clothing if she will marry him instead. She rejects his offer, and yet almost immediately, she changes her mind, on condition that he be 'loyal and constant'. Finally, the erstwhile true love appears and is disappointed as he sees the pair disappearing into the distance. The green bushes are both part of the landscape and a symbol of virginity. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:50+-.

In early versions the object of the girl’s affections was an Irish highwayman who was hanged in 1750 for pursuing his ‘trade’ on the Curragh.
