What is Wisdom?In Proverbs 8:5-11 she says,Learn prudence, acquire intelligence, …take my instruction instead of silver,and knowledge rather than choice gold,for Wisdom is better than jewels. This suite of three songs is appropriate for use in a Christian or Jewish religious service or a secular concert. It includes a short audience participation possibility at the end of the last song. All are written for flute, piano, ethnic drum, SATB plus a high soprano part that can be a soloist. The drum part is written out, but could be improvised. The first song, Hear My Call, is short (1:49) and could be used as a call to worship in a religious service. The second song, God Created Me, (4:36) is an anthem of praise using the wonderful words of the creation of Wisdom in Proverbs 8:22-36 with a descant of the creation story in the book of Ben Sira 24:3, found in the Apocrypha. The tenors and basses sing the comparison of Wisdom with the trees of Israel, also found in Ben Sira, all in praise of Wisdom. The third song, Choose Life, (1:16) includes a chant that can be sung by the congregation or audience along with the choir. This could be used as the final hymn in a religious service. All three songs can be used separately or together. At the end of the score you will find a copy of the congregational chant which can be copied and placed in an Order of Service or Program. Purchase includes the right to make eight photocopies. For additional copies please purchase another score from sheetmusicplus.com. The recording is electronically produced and therefore has choral oohs without words. All three songs are on the recording, and at the end there is a flute rendering of the chant.. This is not intended to stand alone, but to be sung, as directed, with the last part of the choir song, Choose Life.

Lyrics were added later by Billy Rose and Edward Eliscu. It was published in 1929, and subsequently included in Youmans musical play Great Day. To today’s ear the lyrics speak about the power of music to brighten one’s day. The original lyrics however contain text that is considered derogatory and worthy of a study of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s to better understand popular American music and racial stereotypes of the early 20th century. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:20. An apt signature tune for choirs.

Mark R Lewis #810549. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1213363). What Wondrous Love Is This is an American folk hymn that became popular during the early 1800s. It was first published in 1811 in the various hymnbooks that came out during the Second Great Awakening with various lyricists credited. Many publications attributed the song's tune to The Ballad of Captain Kidd, a popular, though much older, song and tune at the time. Earlier versions of the text are slightly different, but as with many folk tunes, it is difficult to tell which transcriptions are regional variants and which are errors by the transcriber.This arrangement of the tune by Mark Lewis is for a cappella SATB Ensemble. All four voice parts are featured for a verse with different accompaniment each time. There are key changes to better place the melody in the ranges of each voice and there are moving notes in many background voices through most of the piece. As with many of Mark's arrangements, the outer voices will be pushed towards the extremes of their ranges even though the notes and rhythms are not incredibly difficult. Most intermediate choirs should enjoy performing this piece.

Spirituals were birthed and rooted in the experience of chattel slavery in the United States—and arose out of, as Arthur C. Jones asserts, “deeply meaningful, archetypically human experiences, relevant not only to the specific circumstances of slavery but also to women and men struggling with issues of justice, freedom, and spiritual wholeness in all times and places.†The original text of Soon Ah Will Be Done is as follows: Soon ah will be done with the troubles of the world (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God No more weeping and a-wailing (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my mother (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God I want t’ meet my Jesus (repeat) Goin’ home to live with God When I sang this spiritual growing up, I was struck by both the withering sorrow and expectant hope throughout. The melody and emotion has stuck with me since. When approaching my own arrangement, I hoped to honor the voice of the original writers and their experience of slavery, and I also sought to extend a voice to people today who are suffering from oppression and discrimination. I hoped an appropriate way to honor the experience of the original writers might be to invite the contemporary listener to envision and commit to a better, more just world today—a world of inclusion, radical kindness, compassion, love, and grace—a world where we have the courage to champion the inherent dignity and value of all people, a world where we will be done with all the ways we deny a person’s worth. A world where “heaven has come to earth.†In this arrangement, spoken word is incorporated throughout, intended to heighten the intensity of the performance, and meant to give a sense of immediacy to the challenge for the choir and audience to work together for justice, equity, and wholeness. Spoken word has often been used as the language of protest—and I include it intentionally as a way of giving voice to the choir members (and listener)—where all can stand in solidarity against oppression and injustice. If desired, choir members are encouraged to write their own spoken word text that speaks to issues of inequity and injustice in their own communities. I am writing this program note not long after George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis, MN, on May 25, 2020. As a Minneapolis area resident for the past 25 years, I want to take a more active role in working towards justice in my community. All proceeds received from the sale and performance of Soon We Will Be Done will be directed to ISAIAH—a multi-racial, state-wide, nonpartisan coalition of faith communities fighting for racial and economic justice in Minnesota. Two Views of Scott Joplin is an exploration of a personal and artistic crisis that Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime, went through between 1904 and 1906. This crisis was precipitated by the untimely death of Freddie Alexander in September 1904, to whom Joplin had been married only ten weeks. Knowledge of this marriage was lost to history for almost a century until the Joplin scholar Edward A. Berlin discovered the newspaper obituary, which is quoted in the bass solo in Part II, The Obituary of Freddie Alexander. Apparently, Scott Joplin, already inspired by the progressive ideals of Booker T. Washington, saw a path to social and artistic betterment through his love of Freddie, a daughter of a refined family. During this period, Joplin used the title rag less often in his piano-solo works, and nurtured an interest in opera (he had long been active in vaudeville as well as ragtime piano). He seems to have lost his sense of direction in 1905 and 1906, until led by his publisher John Stark to move to New York City in 1907. Once there, apparently growing out of his grief, Joplin studied with an Italian opera singer and composer, composed his folk opera Treemonisha, and composed Wall Street Rag and his other late masterpieces for piano. Joplin died in April 1917 following two years of debilitating illness. Joplin left almost no personal writings, such as letters or diaries. To create an impression of autobiography, Two Views of Scott Joplin consists mostly of words and music written by Scott Joplin, and piano music composed by two close associates, the composer-pianists Louis Chauvin and Scott Hayden. These words come from Treemonisha, from Joplin’s little-remembered vaudeville and parlor songs, and also from text in his sheet-music---copyright notices, publishers’ addresses, titles and subtitles of rags, performance directions. In most cases, selected lyrics are extracted from songs and paired with piano-solo themes. These ingredients are combined in creative ways to express the biographical narrative. Instrumental themes are re-cast as necessary to express their newly-attached lyrics. But in no place can any of the music in Two Views of Scott Joplin be considered an arrangement of a given, intact composition, nor a medley of tunes, nor a theatrical revue. The character development and dialogue found in Scott Joplin’s Struggle with Destiny (Part II, No. 3) is my own biographical interpretation of Joplin, based on known evidence and on his music.The score contains extensive Performance Notes for performing this 16-minute work as a choral work or as a short opera scene.

Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1144868). Better known by it's longer title Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy, the text for this hymn was written by Joseph Hart in the mid-1700s. The text is thought to be loosely based on his conversion to Christianity. One of the most common tunes to be associate with the text is Restoration, sometimes known as Arise. This pentatonic tune comes from the Southern Harmony collection. This a cappella arrangement by Mark Lewis passes the melody between all four voice parts with key changes that place the melody nicely within every vocal range. Alternating between arpeggiating and homophonic accompaniment, this arrangement provides a wide variety of singing experiences for the choir over the course of the song.

This arrangement of Katakataka grew out of a desire to introduce our classes to the culture and music of the Philippines. While we have several Filipino students in our choirs, we were surprised at how little the non-Filipino students knew of this wonderful and diverse group of islands. In the process of learning this piece, in addition to getting a small sample of the Tagalog language spoken in many parts of the Philippines, we took time to study its history and geography as well as the history and evolution of it’s music - from native instruments, to the Spanish influence and beyond. Additionally we spent time learning a fun Filipino dance called Tinikling and included that dance as part of our performance. Any combination of C instruments would work including violins, flutes, and Orff percussion just to name a few. A good guitar player could replace the piano part to make it more authentically Filipino. My Filipino students were a great help in learning the language and there are several resources available on YouTube and beyond that will aid in better understanding and performing this work.

Lifestyles changed: less social contact, followed by rapid change in workplaces, health care and other institutions. Everyone was affected in some way. Playing music – and choir singing in particular – was considered by many countries to pose an increased risk of spreading infection and was discouraged. During these strange times, I found a poem by Kitty O’Meara on social media. The text originates from her own blog post in March 2020 with the title In the Time of Pandemic. The poem poses an image for a distinctive perspective during the coronavirus outbreak, the hope that something good can come from a collective state of together, apart. The idea of individual freedom of action when things are beyond our control, and at the same time a notion that the time after this will not only exist but can be better than before. The lyrics inspired the music to be both meditative with repetitive phrases and motifs and also uplifting and full of confidence and joy. And the People Stayed Home was commissioned to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the St Jacob’s Vocal Ensemble and was first performed at St Jacob’s Church in Stockholm on November 19, 2022. – Martin Åsander.

Published by Saige Barlow (A0.1011990). This is a very popular hit from Billy Joel, and I thought it would be fun to write an arrangement whether you're using it for a choir or a small ensemble. The mezzo-soprano part was assigned the descant due to where my computer placed the parts, and I have a note about that, so I understand that is not correct and I apologize if you're picky about that like me. Anyway, I think it sounds really catchy. It's arranged in the key of F major, which is slightly higher to better fit the alto line. If you would like, you could use the alto line as a solo part and give the altos the bottom note of the soprano note. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this arrangement. It was really fun to arrange, and I imagine it is really fun to perform. :).
