The lyrics are a mother’s advice to her daughter, warning her to “learn how to pray†and to “fall on your knees before you fall in the wrong direction.†This arrangement is deliberately “choral,†preferring to honor Ms. Foster’s exquisite vocal shadings—a bend here, a fall-off there—by avoiding exact imitation. The basses provide the rhythm section of electric bass and closed hi-hat cymbal, leaving the upper three parts in gospel harmony in all but a few measures of the piece. The divisi is confined to a few chords and is not difficult. An arresting and totally unique setting that will be a favorite with any group that is comfortable singing unaccompanied.

The House Of The Rising Sun was named after Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means Rising Sun in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors. It was located at 826-830 St. Louis St.2) It's about a women's prison in New Orleans called the Orleans Parish women's prison, which had an entrance gate adorned with a rising sun artwork. The melody is a traditional English ballad, but the song became popular as an African-American folk song. It was recorded by Texas Alexander in the 1920s, then by a number of other artists including Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White and later Nina Simone. It was her version The Animals first heard. No one can claim rights to the song, meaning it can be recorded and sold royalty-free. Many bands covered the song after it became a hit for The Animals.

It is a prayer for help in the midst of difficulty and sin, waiting for God with hope in his compassion and forgiveness. Its tempo marking of soulful, but rhythmic highlights the character of the weary, bluesey theme in B flat minor and its falling chromatic accompaniment. However, there are signs of hope throughout the setting, and the last verse mixes its principal key of G major with the original rise and fall of the minor third interval (G to B flat). Hope is, after all, sure and certain, yet it is a trust in a God who is ultimately unseen and unknownable.Psalm 130: Out of the depths have I cried to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice,O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. Why Don't You Do Right (Get Me Some Money, Too) - Choral Arrangement for SATB and Piano arranged by Michael Thomas CoullWhy Don't You Do Right (Get Me Some Money Too!) was originally recorded as Weed Smoker's Dream and is an American blues and jazz-influenced pop song written by ‘Kansas Joe’ McCoy and Herb Morand in 1936.  Both men are given composer credits on the original 78 record label, although Morand’s name is misspelled. In 1936, the Harlem Hamfats recorded the Weed Smoker’s Dream.  Band member Joe McCoy later rewrote the song, refining both the composition and lyrics.  The new tune, titled Why Don't You Do Right (Get Me Some Money Too!), was recorded by Lil Green in 1941, with guitar by William ‘Big Bill’ Broonzy.  The minor key twelve-bar blues song, with a few chord substitutions, proved popular and quickly became a jazz standard. With its roots in blues music, the song originally dealt with a marijuana smoker reminiscing about lost financial opportunities.  After it was rewritten, it took on the perspective of the female partner, chastising her man for his irresponsible ways:  ‘Why don't you do right, like some other men do? Get out of here and get me some money too!’A wonderful bluesy arrangement for full SATB choir with piano accompaniment, not just fun for the choir to sing, but also one the audience will really enjoy too.
