There are several versions of this text (of variable length), all them used to begin in the same way (Lorem ipsum … elit) but goon in different fashions. Therefore, I also invented part of the text, taking care of the metric, structural parallelisms and some hidden allusion to popular music (Tellus, ventus et ignis is Earth, Wind and Fire). The last sentence has even some sense: Verbum sapientes defendit means that the word defends to those who know. In the coda, since it is vocally much more practical to finish in m than in t, I changed the last word: dolor sit ipsum, what carries the existentialist message that pain is oneself.  Musically, the form is a rondo, with an obsessive refrain (based on the sentence we are commenting) which reappears without modifications.  This piece was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 18, 19 and 20 May 2015 (as if from a handbook: one day the text, the following day the music and on the third one big adjustements and the definitive precisions). Ken Litton (ASCAP) Those who have the good fortunate to hear Gustav Holst’s arrangement of PERSONENT HODIE as a choral processional with its engaging melody, measured gait and echoed text have never forgotten the magical moment—and were never really ready for it to end. Hailing from the The Oxford Book of Carols this German plainsong melody—from the Piae Cantones, 1583—has made its way into strong choral and worship traditions at Advent/Christmas.Of all the current texts and arrangements available, this version honors Holst’s unison accompanied setting in an unexpected subtle jazz styling, with the hope of bringing additional range to its established place in advent literature (both in terms of style and in appeal to a variety of age groups). And, On This Day Earth Shall Ring, translated by Jane M. Joseph (text in the public domain) gives it just the traditional touch needed for Jazz Hodie (On this Day).This SATB setting of the tune offers accompaniment designed for piano or organ, optional acoustic/string bass and an optional part for a single player involving three of the percussionist section best friends in the : the suspended cymbal, mallets (vibraphone, marimba or bells or bell lyre), and a small triangle. It should be noted that an electronic piano/synthesizer voice could substitute well for the mallets and the use of handbells is also viable. Perfect for Lessons & Carols presentations!The unison singing and bell-tone echoes of the first stanza/refrain soon give way to smooth, contrasting jazz harmony. The choral ranges are very much within the reach of the average choir and the voicings vary from unison to three and four parts, followed by a return to the character of the opening. The piece builds toward a close with a choral ascent in the final bars and a bass line reminiscent of the first verse, but with an extra jazz twist. But, it can easily be restarted for processional use by simply dropping back into the C minor introduction’s bass line. First performance March, 2023 by Schola Cantorum of Silicon Valley.One morning in early 2022, after having somewhat unexpectedly lost my two aunts and one of my best friends in the world over the previous year or so, I woke up and this piece, along with some tears, poured out in about 15 minutes. For Us the Living contains echoes of Brahms' German Requiem (Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras), Shawn Kirchner's Cornerstone, and Dolly Parton's Light of a Clear Blue Morning (another a song about loss). The words are partly based on a short poem I wrote after my father passed away. I ended to him, Go to sleep, rest a while. So, perhaps obviously, the piece is like a lullaby. What I'm saying is that the purpose of mourning is first to comfort the survivors, and a call to take care of each other -- but also to not just wait for salvation, but to use the memory of our loved ones, to be inspired to pick ourselves up and make ourselves useful while we're on this Earth.Â

The music here was composed within an English musical aesthetic, appropriate for a text by an English poet. Much of the music, especially the double choir sections, were inspired by the English choral music in the Anglican tradition. In addition to antiphonal textures, this piece employs some complex polyphony, reminiscent of the Renaissance, with a rich harmonic palette full of clusters and cross-relations. The piece ends in a dreamlike state, where the grasshopper and cricket are blurred into the overall beauty of nature. May be performed jointly as Two Keats Choruses with The Human Seasons (8086).

Published by Ron James Anderson (A0.965554). Evening Prayer is somewhat in the style of a chorale prelude, with its flowing accompaniment and simple melody. The form divides neatly into two distinct sections-the first in F major, and the second in Bb major. The F major section represents our earthly life. Even though God’s peace is present throughout (the flowing accompaniment), the words speak of the strife and hardship of our time on Earth. While we are here on Earth, we tend to believe that this life is all there is (that F major will continue to the end). But at the point in the music where the text says and our work is done, ending on a D major chord, we find ourselves in a strange place between life and the afterlife; the moment of death itself. After this comes an a cappella section in Bb major, which represents our life in Heaven. The F major life merely served as a dominant preparation for the Bb major afterlife! (Actually, I think we should call eternity life, and our earthly life pre-life). The piece ends with the same flowing passages found in the beginning of the piece, this time in Bb major.

The dynamic indications are not exaggerated: diminuendos at the ends of phrases should be taken to nothing. If singers run out of breath while holding one of these notes they should not rearticulate the pitch.
