Sing the hymns without any variation whatsoever. 2. Combine hymns into a medley of hymns. 3. Change the time signature of a hymn or a verse or section. For example, a hymn in 3-4 time could be changed to 4-4 time by adding an extra beat to each measure. 4. Men, women, or both sing one or more verses in unison. 5. The congregation joins the choir on the final verse or chorus of a hymn. (This is a great way to help the congregation become more familiar with lesser-known hymns.) 6. Women sing one or more verses. Women can sing most hymns in two parts (soprano and alto) or in three parts (soprano, alto, and tenor). 7. Men sing one or more verses. Many hymns can be adapted for use by men's choirs and quartets. This jazz arrangement is a new twist on a classic, prompted by a kid in one of my ensembles saying, why don't you do a jazz version of Finlandia - so I did. The tune comes out well, with the same sense of pride mixed with poignancy. It's suitable for intermediate players and above. I can do bespoke arrangements for other combinations on request. See www.dominicmcgonigal.com Finlandia did not originally have words. Finnish lyrics were added, written by V A Koskenniemi. They were accepted by Sibelius as the official libretto in 1942. The English words are from a hymn We Would Be One written for the Unitarian Universalists. This arrangement has both Finnish and English words.

She breaks away from her expected role as a sheep in an obedient flock and becomes a wolf sharpening her teeth and honing her skills. Moreover, she calls for others to follow her to stand up and face the enemy. More than a century later, Storni’s voice still echoes with a powerful call to action in a world where women’s rights are as fragile as ever. Bored of its usual role as a bird, the flute breaks away from the flock to inhabitat the wolf through transformative electronic distortions. The main theme mimics actual wolf calls, surprisingly comfortable in the flute’s low register. The tango-infused choral harmonies evoke the dissonance and angst in women’s struggle for equality through the ages.

PLANET ORIGAMI : Is my latest play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of family orientated musicals and takes the audience ‘Out of this World’ to a strange little planet in a far distant galaxy on a small barren rocky planet called BEEZEDON. This is a place entirely inhabited by a race of androids, who after some catastrophic event, were the only machines immune from the ensuing radiation which destroyed every living life form and fauna. Before leaving for a safer haven, the emigrating intelligencia built a new colony of these ‘droids and programmed them to make their planet beautiful again by carpeting it with new flowers, when it was deemed ‘safe.’ The droids had carried out this programme diligently for the next thousand years. However no one had thought through the consequence of instigating such a rigid programme and when their preliminary attempts ended in failure and the fauna died,these clever machines found a perfect solution by refering to their data banks and manufacturing replicas from synthesised plastic. Once the programme was completed and with no more space left, the ‘droids instantly ‘restored' themselves and began creating their world all over again. This is where my story begins:- ‘Melody Mayflower’, Is a newly appointed Earth’s Ambassador and a representative of the Commission for Harmony and Concilliation, an organisation which has been extending its borders throughout the Milky Way Galaxy. Our own star system has become a recent member and Melody is one of their many Goodwill Ambassadors. Although she doesn’t know it, she has been selected for the onerous task of convincing the Droid Nation that their programme is now obselete, as Beezedon is now free of contamination, therefore ready for re-planting with organic material.

Lifestyles changed: less social contact, followed by rapid change in workplaces, health care and other institutions. Everyone was affected in some way. Playing music – and choir singing in particular – was considered by many countries to pose an increased risk of spreading infection and was discouraged. During these strange times, I found a poem by Kitty O’Meara on social media. The text originates from her own blog post in March 2020 with the title In the Time of Pandemic. The poem poses an image for a distinctive perspective during the coronavirus outbreak, the hope that something good can come from a collective state of together, apart. The idea of individual freedom of action when things are beyond our control, and at the same time a notion that the time after this will not only exist but can be better than before. The lyrics inspired the music to be both meditative with repetitive phrases and motifs and also uplifting and full of confidence and joy. And the People Stayed Home was commissioned to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the St Jacob’s Vocal Ensemble and was first performed at St Jacob’s Church in Stockholm on November 19, 2022. – Martin Åsander.

In America, it became popular for its English lyrics about a garden party that livens up when the beer begins to flow. This song, incidentally, has been ‘unofficially adopted’ by Wisconsin as a ‘state song’ and is often played for Wisconsin sporting events, not to mention beer halls and gardens everywhere. This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 2:05+ Its novelty makes this a perfect ‘ask the audience to join in’ number.
