The Traditional Latin Requiem Mass is a musical genre that brought the Western musical tradition important works ranging from composers such as Mozart, Faure, Berlioz, Verdi, Palestrina and Victoria. This is a newly composed setting of the Latin text of the Requiem Mass from Stephanie Martin, a master of the choral idiom. This setting of the Requiem has solid choral writing, beautiful melody and rich harmonies. It is that sort of sensuous music that is choirs love to sing, and which stirs the hearts of listeners.In 2017, All Souls’ Church in San Diego, California, commissioned Martin to composed a Requiem for All Souls. Martin’s Requiem for All Souls was premiered on Souls’ Day, November 2, 2017, and dedicated in loving memory of The Reverend Edward Kellogg. On the day before the premiere, Chris Jennewein of the Times of San Diego wrote: This is the first major musical commission in the church’s history, but follows the centuries-long tradition of churches commissioning new music from significant composers. ‘Today many people don’t realize that the music commissioned by churches for performance during Masses, holy days, and other ceremonies forms a part of what we now call classical music,’ says Ruben Valenzuela, who is All Souls’ Director of Music and will conduct the premiere. So many of the landmark works we still love and perform were in many cases commissioned by churches or other religious institutions. Martin’s 25-minute Requiem for All Souls is set to the traditional Latin text of the Requiem Mass and will be performed a cappella. Valenzuela describes it as a work of pure, beautiful vocal music grounded in traditional church music.

Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. This arrangement is for average- to larger-sized SATB a cappella groups, and sits at a intermediate-advanced difficulty for high school/collegiate groups. This arrangement is similarly for the a cappella group looking to explore cluster chords while fulfilling a slow, but moving ballad slot for your song set. While there isn’t a vocal percussionist part in the score, there is a slight amount of body percussion involved in the second verse, which can be replaced by a vocal percussionist if desired.This arrangement features incredible harmonies, including many cluster chords that sound full and rich; these cluster chords are often met with two- and occasionally three-part splits within each voice part, which makes it crucial for each part to be solid. If your group does not have enough members to satisfy the three-part splits, one of the notes can be omitted for a similar sounding product. Additionally, there are two solo opportunities featured, each with the exact same range. If only one solo is desired, the soloist can simply follow the melody. She breaks away from her expected role as a sheep in an obedient flock and becomes a wolf sharpening her teeth and honing her skills. Moreover, she calls for others to follow her to stand up and face the enemy. More than a century later, Storni’s voice still echoes with a powerful call to action in a world where women’s rights are as fragile as ever. Bored of its usual role as a bird, the flute breaks away from the flock to inhabitat the wolf through transformative electronic distortions. The main theme mimics actual wolf calls, surprisingly comfortable in the flute’s low register. The tango-infused choral harmonies evoke the dissonance and angst in women’s struggle for equality through the ages.

This choral work was commissioned by the superb Gloriea Dei Cantores choir from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After finding the text from an old hymn, Hail The Day That Sees Him Rise, O'Connor finished the choral piece to include unusual singing techniques with no other accompaniment except a violin obbligato weaving in and out of the choral textures for a unique combination of sound. The performance length is sixteen minutes.In the recording's liner notes, Mr. O'Connor writes: on a cold February morning I walked into their church, their house of worship and community. I experienced an inspirational devotion to music I'd never known. Under the leadership of Mother Betty, Gloria Dei Cantores voices sounded like angels descending from Heaven, delivering and rendering my music in a way that seemed to shake the rafters and elevate the spirit. It was a magnificent sound borne of discipline and motivation, faithful love for craft and result. A glorious celebration... a joyous melding of mission and gift.
