The text was originally written in Latin. It is a metrical paraphrase of the O Antiphons, a series of plainchant antiphons attached to the Magnificat at Vespers over the final days before Christmas. The hymn has its origins over 1,200 years ago in monastic life in the 8th or 9th century. Seven days before Christmas Eve monasteries would sing the O antiphons in anticipation of Christmas Eve when the eighth antiphon, O Virgo virginum (O Virgin of virgins) would be sung before and after Mary’s canticle, the Magnificat (Luke 1:46b-55). My father succumbed to lung cancer in 2007. Setting this poem helped me
through the grieving process. Bill Merideth was not a musician by trade, but did
enjoy playing the guitar every now and again. The accompaniment found in the
opening section represents some of the chords that he would strum in his recliner
after a hard week of work.
As the piece progresses, the accompaniment becomes more complex representing
the extensive chemotherapy that may have extended my father's life, but certainly
changed him. Finally, as the text brings us closer to death in the final stanza, the
accompaniment is now absent, representing my father's last days in hospice where
he could no longer care for himself.
I certainly believe in the healing power of music and hope that this setting brings
comfort and peace to you as it continues to do so for me.

This hymn is short and may be used as a benediction at the end of a religious service. Of course it is very useful within a choral concert performance of any sort. Just sing it softly when required, sing it sweetly, and your audiences will love it. This traditional Irish blessing is an ancient Celtic prayer. Celtic literature is famed for using images of nature and everyday life to speak of how God interacts with His people. May the road rise up to meet you is about God's blessing for your journey in life - may your walk be an easy one, with no mountains to climb or obstacles to overcome. It alludes to three images from nature - the wind, sun and rain as pictures of God's care and provision: The wind can be likened to the Spirit of God, which helps move you along on rough days. The sun's warmth in the prayer reminds us of the tender mercies of God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven. The soft falling rain speaks of God's provision and sustenance. Finally, we are reminded that we are held safe in God's loving hands as we travel on our journey through life.

The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia).Growing up in Pennsylvania, nd playing for various local community bands, VFW bands ,Lion's Band , etc we played the Pa Polka for many functions, churches, Seniors, Cake Walks, 4th of July programs, summer and spring concerts, marching bands, parades, and many more events.The Pennsylvania Polka is such a fun, happy song, in a march tempo beat.
