This sermon song was inspired by the second half of the sermon Those Who Came With Jesus by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida on November 26,2023 using the text Mark 10: 1-31. I used the first groups who came with Jesus were the Pharisees testing Christ about marriage and devorce, the disciples and the children. In my sermon song Marriage and Children With God I set to the traditional Here Comes The Bride, with a Christian message as apposed to Wagner's pagan opera of origin. This one focuses on the rich man in the Gospel of Mark who, although he kept all of the commandments, lacked one thing - that he sell all he had and give it to the poor. With sorrow he departed from Christ because he had many riches. I avoided the eye of the camel referance, but ended with the line For all things are possible with God.For the music, to describe this event, I tweeked my sermon song LOOK, which has been published by Sheet Music Plus. This SATB arrangement can be used as special music by a quartet, a choir anthem or sung by a congregation with its five verses as a hymn.

I also wrote the lyrics in October the same year as the 500th anniversary of the reformation, which partially brought to mind the lyrics for the chorus, Only by grace, only through faith.Only by Christ pleading for my case.Only Your Word do I receive, Living for the gospel, I believe. Inspiration Each of us, throughout our lives, are faced with choices where the path forward is unclear. Where the decision maybe a crossroad for our lives. Who can guide us? Who should we turn to? Jesus said I Am The Way? The Music A rousing church anthem that begins with the Tenor Soloist searching for answers. Presented with a difficult choice he asks Jesus what should I do now?, who will be my guide?. The choir responds with I Am The Way, offering the response in a polyphonic round, so to speak. Once completed, the opening melody returns sung by the choir followed by a repeat of the chorus. A C section is then introduced, in a minor key, reminding us to follow the Light as Darkness can deceive. The Tenor soloist returns with the opening melody, now with minimal accompaniment, giving a retrospective feeling to the music. The anthem closes with a repeat of the chorus followed by the Tenor soloist giving the piece a finality.

Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create.
