The awe and mystery of our universe is contemplated in this gently flowing music. The piece is based on a poem about a photograph called the Hubble Deep Field, an image made by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. While making the image, astronomers pointed the telescope at a seemingly black and empty piece of space, then made time exposures lasting many days. The resulting photo shows ancient galaxies that existed in the universe billions of years ago. They are so far away that their light is only now reaching the telescope – millions, even billions of years after all their stars have died. In other words, while we see nothing in that piece of sky, the telescope can still see what used to be there. In the end, of course, we will never know what, if anything, is still there. We can only stare into empty black space and imagine...

Despite the simplicity of its text, consisting of only four sung words – Nothing. Aching. Empty. Broken. – these words reflect the raw and unfiltered experience of despair and sorrow. “Despondency†is movement 3 of Jay Dougherty’s Phoenix Cantata, which is a six-movement vocal and piano work that explores the themes of resilience and the transformative power of change. The music and lyrics are the creative work of Dr. Jay Dougherty, with a piano accompaniment by Justin La. Drawing inspiration from the mythical symbolism of the phoenix, this cantata narrates the journey through life's challenges and tribulations and explores how we can learn to comprehend, embrace, and grow from them. Although the Phoenix is not explicitly mentioned, the underlying message resonates with the tale of the phoenix: after facing adversity or transformation, we emerge stronger and more beautiful. Each of the 6 movements centers on a flower garden, the gardener's affection for the garden, the looming storm that could devastate it, and the gardener's eventual realization that, even after the storm, the garden remains beautiful and precious. Movement 3, Despondency, is performed a cappella and makes use of the overtone series and chord clusters to convey the gardener's torment and heartbreak as the garden has lost its innocence after a torrential storm. The reggae bass pattern sounds a little bit tricky for not reggae affiliated singers, but is still not too unusual. For better understanding of the rhythm pattern a shaker is added to give the otherwise empty beginning of bar 21 for example. The solo synthesizer part in the middle is divided up to Soprano, Alto and Tenor for more fun and according to the tone range of each voice. The ending has an open chord imitating the question mark of the title, saying: Find your answer (and the ending chord) by yourself!.

However, it has been used, on occasion, in a concert setting as well. Within liturgy or other worship settings, it is best used as a reflection piece: an affirmation song following the proclamation of the Gospel, or as a thanksgiving piece following the communion rite. While a full SATB choir, with piano, flute, percussion, and brass can yield splendid results, Easter Morn is easily adaptable for use during a simple outdoor sunrise service using guitar and vocals, or with light instrumentation. The tenor of the piece is festive and joyful, yet, somewhat subdued. Fear and confusion initially gripped the women disciples who discovered the tomb empty and first heard the angel's question, “why do you seek the living among the dead? It was not until later when the words of Jesus regarding his resurrection sunk in: “just as he said, JUST AS HE SAID, that their joy overflowed in a chorus of alleluias! Navigating this tension, and capturing this dynamic is key to an effective performance of the piece.
