Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMW222). 9 x 12 inches.While teaching composition at Dordt College, I had the distinct pleasure of working with the administrators of the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra. As a result of that wonderful relationship, I was approached to write a new fanfare for this concert to feature organist Marylou Wielenga. This new fanfare, set in a simple ABA form, includes a setting of the hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, which is presented exclusively in the organ. Counter melodies and motifs are introduced throughout the work in the brass, woodwinds, and strings which are tossed around the orchestra culminating in a presentation set against the hymn presented one last time in the organ. God is praised triumphantly through brilliant brass fanfares and sparkling woodwind flourishes, all grounded by organ hymn. Lauda is gratefully dedicated to Marylou Wielenga and Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Christopher Stanichar, conductor.

I Will Sing and Praise the Lord is an original piece by Mark Lewis. Written for a cappella choir, the lyrics are adapted from Psalm 61 and the tune is entirely original. It begins with a fanfare asking God to listen and moves into a dance-like prayer for God's blessing with the chorus repeating a simple statement of praise to God. This piece is quite achievable by most groups. The sopranos and basses do spend a fair bit of time towards the extreme of their ranges but there is only one (optional) note that can only be reached by a true bass so most singers will have little difficulty performing it.

The piece opens with the tune altered to G mixolydian mode. As the word exploited appears, a sinister-sounding E flat enters the harmony. Open octaves between soprano and bass show the emptying, followed by a shift to E phrygian mode with the word slave. Several dissonances emerge as the narrative gets darker. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although originally conceived for a large chorus with orchestral accompaniment, the setting may be performed with just organ or piano.There's a youtube video at https://youtu.be/HQwYDJRdmcc - this is an extract from the first performance in the magnificent setting of Berlin Cathedral, which was packed to capacity. The quality of both sound and picture isn't great, but it will provide you with an idea of the atmosphere and impact of the piece. The sound recording covers the whole piece, using Sibelius sounds.
