Published by Michelle Kraak (A0.1012606). The Betrayal is written for choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). It is a religious piece based on the passion of Christ. It has aspects of imitation, with a lot of independence in the parts. The vocal parts represent the voice of Jesus, the voices of those who crucified him, a narrator, and also briefly the voice of Peter, Jesus' disciple. The bass primarily sings the role of the people who called for his death, but as the piece continues others join in this role. I wrote some of the lyrics and also pulled some verses in from the Bible. I think this would be a great piece for Holy Week, perhaps on Good Friday or Maundy Thursday. the piece captures some of the intense emotions involved in the crucifixion and would make a great addition to Lenten music in the church. Lyrics:Why did you leave me?Why did you run?I absolved you of your sin. Jesus Christ must die for what he's done. I absolved you of your sin,I saved you from yourselves,I just wanted to lead you,Closer to God. Death! I wanted to give you new life. Three times you will deny me, Woman I do not know him! The SATB choir with soprano solo is set as a Spanish lullaby (imagine castanets and tambourines). It can also be performed as a soprano solo, a cappella. Lyrics begin: The Virgin Mary, when a child, had a little lamb whose fleece was white as snow: and everywhere that Mary went the little lamb was sure to go.... When she grew to be a woman, the Holy Ghost came down from heav'n above: and she conceived a tiny Lamb, the Lamb of God: God's Holy Light.

There is only a piano score for the string ensemble, but a full score can be provided (at no additional cost) to anyone who purchases it. While most of the text is from the Bible, any non-Biblical text is in the public domain. The entire piece takes over 17 minutes. It consists of the 7 cries of Christ from the cross: 1. Father, forgive them, 2. Woman, behold, 3. Truly, I say unto you, 4. My God, 5. I thirst, 6. It is finished, and 7. Father, into thy hands. There is a symmetry in the 7 pieces in several ways that ties it together.

It’s a love song to God but it could also be to a woman. I’ve left it ambiguous so that people can take it how they wish. Basically, it’s just about a guy who’s searching. I’m a seeker. I think I’ll always be a seeker. The change of wording from 'Come on, let the sun' to 'The morning sun' is deliberate, based on singing wrong words to the album track as a child!

The text comes from a set of short poems by Ms. Nava Faith Bawayan evoking short personal impressions and reflections on each of the traditional last seven words of Christ. The music are short musical impressions in a semi-contemporary (avant-garde) style, scored for an SATB choir, Tenor and Soprano Soloists and Piano. It features call and response passages between the soloists and the choir, short canons, and easy chord clusters for certain effects. The tetragrammaton Hebrew name for God, which transliterates roughly to YHWH, means I am that I am. There is something almost mystical about this poem as it was poet’s first one. Mary Elizabeth Frye was an orphan who had never received a formal education. In 1932, she and her spouse offered shelter from the Holocaust to a young Jewish woman named Margaret Schwarzkopf. When Margaret received news that her mother had died in Germany, the distressed houseguest told Mary in all hopelessness that she had never had the chance to stand by my mother’s grave and shed a tear.
