Published by Kevin Longley (A0.1019367). In The Goodness Of God Inspiration Composed in June of 2015, I wrote the music without any thought as to what the lyrical idea would be. The entire piece is in a style that I typically don't compose in but I felt the melody had a certain appeal to it. Once the music was completed I began contemplating the goodness of god and what he has done for us. From there I decided the A section would be about his goodness followed by a section which would contain examples of his goodness. All in all I was pleased with the result and the effort I made with the singing. I especially enjoyed writing the flute part being inspired by a friend (Bob) who plays every Sunday at church. The Music A simple ABABA structure with traditional harmony and flute added for the last A section.

Verbum sapientes defendit.   The Lorem ipsum is a text in pseudo-Latin, loosely inspired in a writing of Cicero[1] and that since the XVI century is used in publishing as filler text. Today it is used with a similar function, in electronic documents or web design. There are several versions of this text (of variable length), all them used to begin in the same way (Lorem ipsum … elit) but goon in different fashions. Therefore, I also invented part of the text, taking care of the metric, structural parallelisms and some hidden allusion to popular music (Tellus, ventus et ignis is Earth, Wind and Fire). The last sentence has even some sense: Verbum sapientes defendit means that the word defends to those who know. In the coda, since it is vocally much more practical to finish in m than in t, I changed the last word: dolor sit ipsum, what carries the existentialist message that pain is oneself.  Musically, the form is a rondo, with an obsessive refrain (based on the sentence we are commenting) which reappears without modifications.  This piece was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 18, 19 and 20 May 2015 (as if from a handbook: one day the text, the following day the music and on the third one big adjustements and the definitive precisions). Latin.Herrmann Schroeder (1904-1984), one of the most important church music composers of the 20th century, wrote this Latin mass in 1961, i.e. at the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. The Council marked a turning point in the field of church music: Masses in the respective native languages gained more and more acceptance, Gregorian chant faded into the background, stylistic features of popular music were also taken up in church music. Today, about 50 years after the beginning of the Council, one can see a return to Gregorian chant and polyphonic vocal music, and this is why even works such as Schroeder's Latin Missa melismatica arouse great interest again. The work takes the free intonation of the Gregorian chant as a starting-point and is enriched with wide-spun melodic arcs in elaborate polyphony, according to Schroeder's opinion that Gregorian chant and polyphony are particularly suitable for giving expression to the mysticism and irrationality of religious faith in the liturgy. What would normally be a somber litany of affliction is set to music that hints at eternal things and the saving power of God. The middle section “I said, ‘In the middle of my days, O my God, do not take away me†is set, amazingly, in Latin, which gives a wonderful contrast to the more lyrical beginning. The beginning material returns as the Latin text is now sung in English, concluding “Thy years throughout all ages are.†This music is sublime and transcendent.

The title refers to a bird that got into the cornmeal. “Tico-Tico”’s catchy, syncopated rhythm is irresistible; the critical challenge is to capture that elusive rhythm – with that perfect tempo. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The “Benedictus†is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic “Hosanna†follows. The “Agnus Dei†is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the “miserere,†the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the “Gloria†returns. That same motif continues into the “dona nobis pacem,†as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, “Pacem.†Duration 7:33.
