An Anacreontic poem is a drinking song or light lyric. Lyrics for this piece that won 1st prize in the Sorel Medallion Contest in 2009 are by Abraham Cowley: Love--I'll Sing of Heroes and of Kings; Wallace Stevens excerpt from Canto VII/VIII and and excerpt from Homer's Odyssey. The guitar part uses alternate tunings in the last movement. There are a few places with divisi, but it is minimal. SATB and guitar.

Published by David Rain, Choral Composer (A0.1094371). “How heavy lies the heart†has drawn inspiration from the traditional French Christmas carol, “Quelle est cette odeur agréableâ€, which John Gay also set as a boisterous drinking song in the Beggar’s Opera, “Fill every glass, for wine inspires us!†The song also draws inspiration from Josquin’s Missa Pange Lingua. I dedicate this piece to my friends in the composer/singer collective, the Ad hoc Chorale, who tested out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offered valuable comments. Optional endings. Note that choirs have been given the option to choose which of the 3 endings they would like to sing, depending on how they feel the “story line†in the song should best reach its conclusion: (1) The “happy†ending appears to indicate that the narrator has been reunited with the friend or lover who departed. (2) The “less happy†ending plants a seed of doubt that no such reunion has happened; it may be in the narrator’s head. (3) The “even less happy†ending leaves listeners in even more doubt. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. “How heavy lies the heart†seemed to work perfectly as the musical representative of an autumnal spirit.

In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups. About the National Anthem:The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship. At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States. Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation. According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning. Thomas Coker, August 27, 2015

Many years before Lloyd Webber's Cats I created my own setting for TS Eliot's Song of the Jellicles (from Old Possum's book of practical cats) The estate of T S Eliot would not let me use the poem itself as a choral piece. Â So this is the choral version of the Jellicle music as a drinking song for SATB choir, Â with new words by Jill Mitchell called Praise to the Vine Bring out the goblets! Pour the wine! Â Praise to the vintage, red and white! Â Salute to the harvest of the vine! Â Banish sobriety! Welcome delight! Â The performance is a live recording from a concert by Duodecimo. Â Other (instrumental) versions of the Jellicle music which are available are: A duo for descant recorder and guitar (Jellicle Duo for recorder and guitar) A quartet for recorders (Jellicle Quartet for recorders) and A quartet for strings (Jellicle Catgut for string quartet).
