He Lives Today, choral church anthem composed in 2016 The Inspiration The anxiety, fear and anticipation felt by Mary as she approached the tomb of Jesus, only to be replaced by great joy! The Music Composed for choir, soprano soloist, flute and piano. The piece begins with a somber flute solo, depicting Mary's journey to the tomb of the Lord Jesus. When finally reached, the flute solo quietly ends and the glorious choir response begins Our Lord Has Risen! He Lives Today! followed by the directive Go Spread The News!. The soprano soloist then recounts the event at the tomb between Mary and the angel. A repeat of the initial chorus brings the piece to a joyous close Our Lord Has Risen! He Lives Today! Program Notes The piece was written specifically to be used at the beginnings of a church service, or at the end, with the flute solo omitted. Of course it can be used for both!

This interesting composition creates the impression that the tenors and basses are the shepherds and the sopranos and altos are the angels as it describes the shepherds' journey to find the Christ Child. Full of meaning and beautiful chording, it can easily be performed as a tenor/bass duet using soloists, with other tenors and basses joining in on the tutti sections. The song has several key changes and is mostly in a minor key, except for one section when the angels sing. It can be a real show piece for your tenors and basses, and lends itself to the dramatic acting out of the scenarios. Performance time is @ 5-6 minutes.

The Battle of Kresvia is an a capella choral piece that tells the story of several knights going to fight in a mythical battle. There are several phases throughout this song. It starts out with a recurring melody of the soldiers marching, then the knights pause to dream about what they will encounter. However, all of their dreams turn to nightmares when they realize the mortal terror they will encounter. The warriors drearily march until their commander riles the troops and raises their morale. (1604–68), hailed as the Horace of Germany and considered one of the greatest Latin poets of any era.In the case of the three poems selected, Balde’s vivid imagery and mastery of Latin poetics are put in service of religiousexpression. The poems are filled with countless allusions to the classical poetic tradition; notably, he creates a strongcorrelation between the Virgin Mary of his Christian tradition (Balde was a Jesuit priest) and the goddesses invoked inclassical Latin poetry. Thus, Balde uses the older forms to express something that was, for him, contemporary andrelevant. (An analogue to this use of language is the idea of creating new music to be played on period instruments.)The opening sinfonia begins with an ascending pattern of triads, which returns throughout the work. Dynamics are important in relaying the meaning of the text and should be observed, although the conductor should feel free to augment these whenever she or he deems it necessary. As always, relaying the meaning of the words through the music should always be considered the primary goal of the performance.
