In the motion picture Iniquity, which is a modern version of the account of David and Bathsheba, her role was that of the lead juror. The songwriting and poetry of Verna May Hall Linzey portrays her philosophy of life that made her an American English icon. Verna received the 2006 “Best Non-Fiction of the Year” Award from the San Diego Christian Writers’ Guild for her book, The Baptism with the Holy Spirit, She also authored The Gifts of the Spirit, Spirit Baptism, and Pearls of Gold (The Poetry of Verna Hall Linzey). She received the Gold Record Award for “Best Vocals in Southern Gospel Music” from the International Biographical Centre for her CD, O Blessed Jesus in 2012. This album included the Triumphant Quartet and Sisters singing backup vocals. The Triumphant Quartet was nominated for a Grammy Award and has been voted as the number one quartet in Southern Gospel Music for several years in a row.In 2015, Verna received the Best-Selling Author’s Award from the National Critics’ Choice as the translator of Proverbs for the Modern English Version Bible. The MEV has been in the top ten-selling English Bible translations in 2015 according to the Evangelical Christian Publishing Association. Verna is the Chief Editor of the New Tyndale Version Bible translation.On Sunday, May 8, 2016, a commemorative edition of the Modern English Version Bible was presented to the Queen, Her Majesty Elizabeth II, at Windsor Castle by Verna Linzey, the translation committee, and her publisher. Verna was subsequently named “Mother of the Fleet” by Admiral Frederick C. Johnson, USN (Ret.) and his staff of Navy and Marine officers at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, California. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. Mystery of the Hills is an S.A.T.B. choral work describing the wonder of the Flint Hills, a region in East Central Kansas.  I’m not a native Kansan, but whenever I drive through this area, I am enthralled by the infinite sense of expanse and gently rolling terrain. Geologists believe there was an inland seaway that covered central North America starting 290 million years ago. Over time, alternating layers of hard limestone and softer shale rocks formed. It is believed erosion caused the varied elevations of terrain, unique to the slopes of the Flint Hills. These surface layers of limestone and chert prevented the settler’s ability to farm, which in turn preserved the integrity of the soil. Today, the prairie grasses can reach 10 feet tall if not managed.  The rich grasses are prime for feeding livestock. This music attempts to provide images of traveling through the Flint Hills today, while imagining changes over eons of time, due to weather and eventually, human interaction.  Generally, the upper voices provide the imagery and some history, while the lower voices describe a bedrock foundation.  Describing the rock foundation found in the Flint Hills is also a metaphor for human strife and struggle as man, among living flora and fauna, interact with the area. The vocal ranges and harmonies are accessible for young ensembles, whether in development or with years of experience.

The true beauty of this piece lies in its functionality. The song is highly recommended for the choir that has an over abundance of female voices, and it can also be performed solely SSA, omitting the tenor and bass lines. Not only is this song an excellent learning piece for high school students, the poetic text makes it appropriate for adult choirs as well. A note from the composer: I chose to base the lyrics on the Whippoorwill for the uniqueness of this bird. The Whippoorwill is a bird that flies during the night instead of the day. They have nests on the ground instead of in trees, and the Native Americans believe that the Whippoorwill will catch a soul in flight as it is leaving the earth. Another fun fact is that John Burroughs, famous naturalist of the Burroughs Audubon Society in Kansas City, once heard a Whip-poor-will make 1,088 vocal repetitions before pausing.

Why Don't You Do Right (Get Me Some Money, Too) - Choral Arrangement for SATB and Piano arranged by Michael Thomas CoullWhy Don't You Do Right (Get Me Some Money Too!) was originally recorded as Weed Smoker's Dream and is an American blues and jazz-influenced pop song written by ‘Kansas Joe’ McCoy and Herb Morand in 1936.  Both men are given composer credits on the original 78 record label, although Morand’s name is misspelled. In 1936, the Harlem Hamfats recorded the Weed Smoker’s Dream.  Band member Joe McCoy later rewrote the song, refining both the composition and lyrics.  The new tune, titled Why Don't You Do Right (Get Me Some Money Too!), was recorded by Lil Green in 1941, with guitar by William ‘Big Bill’ Broonzy.  The minor key twelve-bar blues song, with a few chord substitutions, proved popular and quickly became a jazz standard. With its roots in blues music, the song originally dealt with a marijuana smoker reminiscing about lost financial opportunities.  After it was rewritten, it took on the perspective of the female partner, chastising her man for his irresponsible ways:  ‘Why don't you do right, like some other men do? Get out of here and get me some money too!’A wonderful bluesy arrangement for full SATB choir with piano accompaniment, not just fun for the choir to sing, but also one the audience will really enjoy too.
